Reviews for Dr. Amar S. Ranawat
Dr. Ranawat and his entire staff are truly best in class. I had 2 total hip replacement surgeries by Dr. Ranawat, and my experience from start to finish has been wonderful. It's no wonder HSS is the #1 hospital for orthopaedic surgery.
He has saved my life in the best sense of the word. He is a wonderful doctor and person! I can walk my dog, walk five miles a day again and work! Thank you so much, Dr. Amar!
He did a bilateral hip replacement. He insisted everything was fine even though could not walk and was in intense pain. Had to have the procedure revised. He told me to wait two years. It turns out the prostheses were both put in wrong at an inappropriate angle. The correcting surgeon was appalled at the sloppy work.
The lady that answers the phone is beyond rude.
Whichever woman answers the phone and makes appts should not be working with people. PERIOD.
Terrible experience overall. Its one thing to be a good doc & surgeon, but your bedside manner needs to be top notch. I have never felt more angry and violated as I did when I walked out of this over glorified office. Maybe the awards cover up Dr. Ranawats terrible personality and ill communication to his patients for some, but for me it was a dog and pony show! Never ever ever would I allow him to operate on me. Amazing first class experience from start to finish. Dr. Ranawat and his staff were courteous and professional. The surgical suites were so impressive. He did surgery on my left, then right shoulder, my husbands knee and my daughter in laws knee that a college team doctor messed up. He fixes/repairs what others can’t. He is one of the best! I see people posting negative reviews about having to provide insurance and MRI information to get an appointment and complaining about it, however if you’ve ever been to a top rated doctor that’s the process. I just made an appointment at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore for an unrelated autoimmune issue and had to do all the same things and never gave it a second thought. It’s the process! Dr. Ranawat is top rated for a reason and there is a process for a reason. For our family seeing him was well worth it. Amazing first class experience from start to finish. Dr. Ranawat is the best. Did my ACL reconstruction last year and now my shoulder this year. He is an awesome doctor and couldn’t recommend him more. They are an extremely busy office which I think is the reason for some of the reviews but if you find a doctor that isn’t this busy, I would think twice. Thank you as always Dr R!
I had an accident that resulted in a torn gluteus medius, basically the muscle that attaches my leg to my hip tore. I couldn't walk properly. I found Dr. Ranawat through the HSS Referral system. I was nervous about having surgery but i was fearful of anesthesia. Dr. Ranawat reviewed my diagnostics, examined me and determined i did indeed need to have that gluteus repaired. He was kind, informative and competent. He listened to all my concerns and arranged to have the anesthesiologist meet with me to address my worries. I was so impressed with this practice. There is literally a person for every single thing you might need. I went into surgery knowing what would take place and what to expect afterwards. Would you believe i was walking pain free only two hours after waking up in recovery? I was wowed! My dressing was dry, no bleeding. Dr. Ranawat came to see me just as i was walking about with the nurse. He was so happy to see me up and about! He told me i was a real trooper! In reality, he was an excellent surgeon and that made all the difference in my recovery. The anesthesiologist was great and so were the nurses! It was actually a nurse who put in my IV lines prior to surgery. They were able to find my vein quickly and for that i was soo grateful. They kept me overnight to make sure i remained well. The next day they set me up with physical therapy, aftercare, and my follow up appointments and I went home. Pool therapy was hands down the most helpful of all the interventions. A special thanks to Rachel Taylor, Dr. Ranawats right hand. She pretty much handled my pre and aftercare. She was amazingly knowledgeable and very skilled with all the documentation required for work related injuries, and she did everything timely! That is so crucial with work related injuries. I just loved Ranawat Orthopedics. They are now my go to whenever i have any questions or issues. Renee and Paul were also great. Thanks so much guys! Im so grateful to you all! Dr. Amar Ranawat performed a hip replacement on my right hip about eighteen months ago. Things did not go well. Some how my iliac was fractured during the surgery. I spent five weeks in rehab. I am still using a walker and in noticeable pain. Dr. Ranawat insisted every thing was fine. I saw him six weeks after the surgery and twelve weeks after the procedure. The last time I saw him he said I was fine when I asked him what I should do about the pain he just shrugged and walked away. The Ranawat practice is industrial assembly line medicine. If things go well you will be satisfied. If things do not go well do not expect tender loving care. You are pretty much on your own.
I also endured similar truths when interactioning with staff scheduler, Erica. You are made to feel like you must be vetted to even get the privilege of scheduling an appointment—or not. I understand however that the Ronawat's are a few of the best orthopaedic specialist/surgeons NYC has to offer. I am worthy and patience enough for the processing. Now, if only the practice management could afford to surround itself with staff beffitting the reputation of the surgeons, potential patients would appreciate the reduction in heartburn, agita, aggravation, angst and localizee insults while trying to secure an appointment. Seriously injured me alongside his PA Dr Rachel Taylor. I have EDS and I will never forget January 2015 when my life changed forever. The story is a long one but to be brief I went in to be diligent checking different joints as I had been recently diagnosed with ehlers danlos. Even Dr Taylor marked on her notes “no pain?!!” I went in with a painless right hip clicking and they extended me beyond my physiologic range and tore both my hip labrums. I later found out my internal rotation range was 15 percent and she even noted she took me almost 3 times over that!! I couldn’t walk for a year and can no longer sit cross legged as I always loved to. I have daily pain and my lower back is now “going” also and my knees as the hip labrum is a massive stabilizer and when compromised other things become affected also. Even Dr Ranwat said at the end of the appointment “well the good news is you have no pathology and just a clicking hip” YES I did until your PA destroyed my hips and my life. I think for this lady to continue in her profession knowing she has ruined someone’s life and never even apologized is one of the most horrific miscarriages of Justice I know. This woman essentially crippled me. And Dr Ranawat mocked my illness saying “you all think you have Eds” Yes I DO and as you thought I didn’t, and over extended me, you broke me and stole my life from me. Doctors like this give good and kind and professional doctors a bad name. Seriously injured me alongside his PA Dr Rachel Taylor. I so agree with Al DeVincentis. I called today 10/5/2018 to make an appointment and the same thing happened to me! I could not BELIEVE the way she spoke to me by rattling off what was needed prior to my visit. How degrading and disgusting of her! Never saw the dr because I could not even make an appointment . The first person who answered hung up on me by accident . The second gentleman was kind of rude , asked for MRI results via fax (?) and for me to fax my insurance card - all to just book an appointment . Wound up hanging up because it seemed to difficult to schedule. Edit : just read some of the reviews and I’m not alone ! Thought it was just me ! Excellent care from start to finish. Highly recommend Dr Ranawat!
Dr. Ranawat did my knee 10 years ago Simply the best.
I went to Dr Ranawat for a hip arthroscopy on the recommendation of my own brother. It was the best decision I could have made and can’t thank him enough. I sent years in pain and after having surgery on both hips last summer, I feel like he gave me 5 years of my life back.
I couldn't be more pleased with my experience from start to finish. Both the doctor and PA explained everything and answered all my questions. I could sense I was in good hands throughout my diagnosis and recovery. My experience with the rest of the staff was also very good and scheduling was a breeze. I think it's unfortunate that the receptionist responsible for scheduling appointments treats potential "new" patients like we may or may not be worthy of an appointment. Not sure the Doctor wrote the script that way. On 1/29/18 at 11:45 AM, I responded to an online referral service an attempted to make an appointment with Dr. Anil Ranawat's office. The receptionist rattled off a list of items that would need to be reviewed prior to getting an appointment. Aside from her rapid fire approach, it seemed reasonable! I then asked the receptionist if the online form that I had filled out which included a general history of my case, insurance information etc.. would be sufficient, at which time, I assumed the role of idiot! I was met with a condescending attitude combined with chuckle under the receptionists breath. I doubt this is a common practice when a potential patient is trying to understand the requirements in getting an appointment with Dr. Ranawat. I could have easily moved on like so many others, but I think the doctor's in this office should know how they are being represented. Good luck chuckles! He was my fourth knee replacement surgeon whose opinion I was seeking for. He did not touch my leg, he refused to answer my questions or discuss my concerns, he spent max 2-3 min with me obviously showing anger even being in the exam room. I left devastated, frustrated, confused and truly in tears, despite the fact he decided to schedule my surgery for October. He does up to 8 knee replacements per day, and it scaries me --I am not a part of his assembly line, esp. with such complicated case

The best of the best. Amar did both of my knee replacements in 2004 and 2005 at Lenox Hill. I found he and his Staff to be courteous, knowledgeable and very professional. So much so that I sort him out once again in March 2017 to do my hip replacement at HSS rather than a doctor closer to home in NJ. I HAVE NOT BEEN DISAPPOINTED WITH MY DECISION. My remaining hip may need replacing sooner than later and I will return to the Ranawat practice.

I was out of the country and needed to make an appointment for the day i returned. I signed up through Doc Zoc. They emailed me a day after asking for info on the issue and my insurance. I emailed back and explained the situation. Again they emailed me and said they couldn't book the appointment until they see past X-rays etc. I tried explaining to them that there were none because it was a new issue. I forwarded them my insurance info. Again they emailed me saying they didn't feel my issue was shoulder related and said to find someone else. I wrote back saying that it was and that the doc should be making that determination and if it wasn't something he could treat then I would have to find someone else. He would still get paid regardless. Now days have gone by and now it was impossible to find someone else that takes my insurance at this late day and time. I was still overseas and couldn't call anyone directly. I go another email from them explaining that the doctor was over booked, was going on vacation and was only working a half day and it wasn't fair to them and the other patients that they try to squeeze me in. It isn't fair to them, what about me who is in pain, who went thought the correct channels to get an appointment? And if they were so over booked them they shouldn't have had two appointments available on Doc Zoc for this doctor. Now I am forced to spend $150 and go to an ER to get seen all because they couldn't be bothered. I can't tell you if he is a good doctor or not, but their staff is horrible. Avoid at all costs if possible. They do not care about patients, especially new ones! I was out of the country and needed to make an appointment for the day i returned. I signed up through Doc Zoc. I met with Dr. Ranawat regarding treatment options for hip arthritis. I felt his answers to my questions were kurt, dismissive, and unsupported by factual information.

A terrible doctor and extremely arrogant who tore my hip labrums during a physical exam and then tried to tell me I already had a tear when I used to walk limitless amounts. I went in for a right hip clicking that caused no pain but I have Ehlers Danlos and wanted to be diligent checking out body parts. He then tore my left hip labrum and I could not walk for 5 months. I will live with this forever and he should not be practicing medicine.

He never mentioned a gluteus maximus tear prior to hip replacement surgery, only told me about reatachment of the muscle after surgery. Made no attempt to stablize re-attachment after surgery. Never found out if tear was present before surgery or done during surgery. Attachment did not hold and muscle atrophied. Didn't want to hear anything about complaints, just said there was nothing that could be done. Was walking better before hip replacement surgery than after.

Dr. Amar Ranawat did a total R hip replacement. I read ALL the information sent to me ahead of time which answered most of my questions. At the time of my initial appointment, my concerns were addressed. I left scheduled for surgery and was confident that Dr. Ranawat was the best doctor for my health care needs. Surgery was very successful and I returned to work ahead of what was anticipated; I did arrange for transportation. I feel terrific! And have returned to a more active lifestyle!

I am a 24 year old patient who was in need of a hip replacement due to congenital hip dysplasia when I was born. I have been a patient of the hospital for special surgery for 22 years. If you want the best surgeon, he is your doctor. He's not the friendliest Doctor I've seen, but he did an excellent job. 7 weeks later and I'm already back at the gym and I would never know I had a replacement.
