Had surgery for multiple breaks in my lower leg. Dr Gerken took great care of me. The surgery was handled really well. This was my first time with full anesthesia and I was a bit nervous. But the whole process was nurturing and easy. I was put under anesthesia in the pre-op area and woke up back there after surgery. The anesthesiologist also took time to talk with me and I let him know that my body is pretty sensitive to medication as I rarely take any. Whatever he gave me was perfect. Dr Gergen did a minor surgery on my foot -everything -the office staff - the operating staff and Dr Gergen made it easy to understand and were very good at what they do - a success for me

I've have orthopedic problems since I was born over 30 years ago and I can't remember seeing anyone with the incompetence and utter lack of interest in treatment that was displayed by Dr. Gerken. Not only could he not offer a straight answer for questions like if I would be able to walk with my heel bone removed, after about 10 minutes of non-answers and smug indifference, he started to abruptly make his way out the door and I had to keep peppering him with questions to keep him from walking out on me. He should have retired years ago if he cares this little about patient care. My whole experience is not finished yet, but so far I am extremely satisfied with Dr Gerken and all staff members. They have made my foot surgery seamless as possible. Dr Gerken is to the point. I am currently under Dr. Gerken’s care because of a knee problem and had surgery two weeks ago. So far my recovery has been uneventful but on time. Dr. Gerken is always thorough and explains things extremely well. I’ve also found that his office staff have provided excellent supportive services. Dr Gerken is very professional, knowledgeable and has a good sense of humor. He performed successful arthroscopic surgery on both my knees and I was able to walk the same day with no pain and I healed very fast. His staff exemplifies his leadership and is also very efficient, professional and most importantly, very kind and empathetic. Great team Doctor! Thanks again!! I cannot comment on Dr. Gerken as a physician/surgeon because he refused to see my son. We arrived ten minutes late and I did not fill out the online paperwork bc we had seen another doctor in the system so I didn’t think we were considered new. His intake person asked him if he could see us and he refused. I got upset and said that I could fill the paperwork quickly and then spoke to the inside office staff who just looked at me apathically and refused. When I told them that I myself was a pediatrician and knew it would be a quick visit and could help explain what the problem was, they just said the doctor refused. When I asked to speak to the doctor myself, they put me in the hallway and I was left waiting, the doctor did not come to speak with me and was just ignored. I left in tears honestly bc I had rushed to leave work, take my child out of school only to be refused our appt and disregarded. I have never been so maltreated in an office before by anotherMD or as a mother/child.

He provided excellent care. The surgery went well, and he made me feel extremely comfortable about the process.

I saw Dr Gerken in June of 2019 for an ankle injury which occurred in early May 2019 and he told me I had an ankle sprain. It is now nearly October 2019 and I have multiple tears in the anterior and posterior tib-fib ligaments, a non-united avulsion fracture that has been concealed within scar tissue that has healed around the ligament, and nearly whatever tendon damage one can imagine. He looked at my x- Ray report which reflected the fracture, but told me it was a bruise and my ankle was just sprained. So much for getting to swim/surf again. He didn’t even consider taking further images of the ankle which was as swollen as a tennis ball and could not be moved. Completely ridiculous. I saw Dr. Gerkin to repair a painful swollen torn tendon in the front of my knee. After months of continued pain and another MRI I spoke with Dr. Beyer, the senior orthopedic knee specialist at Hoag. During the surgery Dr. Gerkin found a small bone spur he tried to remove, but the instrument somehow got stuck and while trying to remove it he managed to shave off most of the cartilage in the back of my knee. Being understandably upset he forgot to repair the tendon. After quitting his group, I had another surgeon try to repair my knee. Post surgery he showed me pictures of what looked like mounds of white cheese that used to be my cartilage. Being shocked he too forgot to fix the torn tendon. This is no joke. I am told I need a knee replacement now due to the damage at his hands and now need a scooter to get around. I was 48 yrs old when this happened. Please be very careful when choosing a surgeon and advocate for drug testing of all surgeons. Malpractice is 3rd leading killer in US.

Beautiful facility. Easy access in and out. Very nice staff working there. Dr Gerken was professional, clear and precise in his diagnosis and recommendation.

Dr. Gerken is Outstanding. He is thorough and examines you before coming to a conclusion of his diagnosis.

Excellent experience from beginning to end. Dr Gerken was very thorough and cautious throughout the last year and a half making sure that we always tried the least intrusive approach to treatment first. I highly recommend him and his team.

Monica Martinez was my first introduction to Dr. Gerken’s team over the phone. It was like connecting with a close friend I hadn’t seen in a long time! She’s awesome! I felt she really cared about me and not just my need for surgery. She is so kind and personable. Dr. Gerken is the best!! I felt his assessment and care was specific to me, to my needs. Three weeks post surgery and recovery, I am doing a hundred times better than I imagined I would be. I’m so thankful for their professional and gracious care. The medical assistants are this office are completely unprofessional. After advising my 77 year old mother not to travel, Dr Gerken dictated a letter for my mother to submit to travel agents in order to cancel her trip. The first assistants said they could not print out the letter until after 24 hours. They took our fax and said they would fax. No fax ever came through - nor did one come through after the second assistant on the phone the next day claimed she faxed. 4 assts, 4 diff stories.

I was referred to Dr. Gerken for surgery and I have had the best experience from start to finish. He and his staff, both in office and in surgery could not have been better as far as making me feel comfortable and answering any questions I had. The pre and post care is awesome and I would absolutely recommend Dr. Gerken.

Broke my ankle, Doctor quickly assessed my condition with on site X-ray, provided boot during appt, and gave clear direction and explanation of bone healing process. Office team was very helpful and efficient. Highly recommend.

Totally arrogant. This says it all: he double books his appointments, takes people in at scheduled appointment time, whether or not they show up early or late. So if you have a 9:30 appt, & show up at 10:00, you are still seen first, even if another person courteously shows up early for their 9:45 appt. Even asked why he double books & leaves so many people waiting; he totally ignored my question. Waited an hour, he spent maybe 7 minutes & left. No warm fuzzies that he even cared. How Rude!

I was dealing with an ankle condition for 3 years and seeing multiple doctors without any relief or answers in sight. I happen to be referred to this medical group by a friend and luckily enough to of found Dr. Gerken. Dr Gerken diagnosed my condition and did the necessary surgery to fix my ankle that had been troubling me for years. He was very compassionate, listened to all of my concerns, and answered all my questions. I can't thank him enough for helping me get back to a healthy lifestyle

He fixed my badly broken leg very well. No major problems during my recovery. Was very compassionate to me during my hospitalization and early recovery. Very nice staff at Newport Orthopedic Institute in spite of how busy everyone is. Wait is understandable.
