Thank you, Dr. Wierks! The drive up to Grand Rapids was well worth it. After almost 2 years of sports medicine doctors and lots of P.T., he offered a cortisone injection for my hip pain. After 2 days, I was pain free! I don't understand the negative reviews - he was attentive, kind, and very pleasant. Thanks again!!

Deceptive, dishonest & inhumane. I had a hip arthroscopy performed by Dr. Wierks over 3 years ago due to a supposed torn labrum. I was not educated or informed concerning what the surgery would entail or how to care for myself post-operation. I have massive scars and significantly worse pain post-operation. It was post-operation that I developed the symptoms of a torn labrum. Follow-up was minimal and my concerns were ignored. Some bone was also shaved during the operation and when I was shown the before and after of the bone shaving on x-ray, the amount of bone taken was absolutely appalling. I was told my hip should not be able to “pop” post-surgery and that has not been true either. A radiologist outside of Spectrum looked at my MRIs (unfortunately post-surgery) and told me he wouldn’t have even recommended that I have surgery. My body is permanently damaged from allowing Dr. Wierks to operate. Deceptive, dishonest & inhumane. I had a hip arthroscopy performed by Dr. Wierks over 3 years ago due to a supposed torn labrum. Hip surgery for FAI and labrum tear in fall 2018. Completed a 100 mile race almost exactly one year later. Friendly, staff was great, everything went well. The negative reviews are odd to me, my experience was fantastic.

I partially dislocated my hip playing soccer, tore my labrum. After dealing with instability/pain in my hip for almost a year I decide to have surgery. So glad I did! 3 months post op I knew I made the right decision. I can run and do everything else again. I’m so grateful for dr Wieks and his PA, I think of them as Batman and Robin. Dr. Wierks bedside manner could have been better but I chose him because he is an excellent surgeon and that is what matters at the end of the day. Very condescending and uncaring. Was super harsh and wouldn’t listen about how much pain I was in. I waited another month to get into a second opinion rather than have Dr. Wierks do my surgery if he would have even done it. Would not recommend unless you’d like to be talked to like you’re stupid or ignored.

There is a definite theme here and if I had read the reviews ahead of time I would have saved my then 18yo daughter the humiliation of seeing this man 2 months ago. She is a dancer and big and muscular. She dances five or more times a week. She told him this. He only looked at her BMI and told her she should probably get gastric bypass. Eighteen. He didn't look at her history, didn't look to the fact that she in an athlete, nope. I have waited to do this write up until we found another doctor. Which we did, by the way, in South Bend IN at a place that works with athletes from a major college in the area and therefore are used to working with all body types. The staff at Wierks office were very nice. But he is awful. A little over a year ago, I posted a raving review of Dr. Wierks. I have since changed my mind entirely. I was in a terrible car accident and needed a labral repair. I was satisfied at that time and I completely believed that I made the right decision. I was very wrong. It was later determined that the damage from my accident was more severe than they thought and a complete THA (hip replacement) was needed. I had to make a decision as to whether I wanted Wierks to do the surgery or the orthopedic surgeon who referred me. I chose Wierks and that was a terrible mistake. I kept telling him post op that I wasn't doing well and instead of listening and helping, he blew me off and basically said it was all in my head. I went back to my other surgeon for all of my post op care and I'm glad I did. I am now being treated like a human being instead of a MRN (medical record number). Dr. Wierks made me feel like I should be fine b/c HE did the surgery. I have since taken back my 5 star rating (I'd give him a 0 if I could). My opinion? Find another surgeon without a God complex. For those who might benefit from hearing my unique experience... I'm a 43 year old international yoga teacher trainer. A labrum tear in 2018 started my journey of being turned away by SIX other surgeons, (I was too dysplastic for labrum repair, the cartilage was too damaged for PAO, the arthritis didn't appear bad enough for THR) --- Dr. Wierks was the only one who was willing to help. He listened to me. He trusted my pain level even though it didn't match the imaging. He didn't care what the other doctors said. He believed I would feel better with THR. His work with Olympic skiers and snowboarders reassured me. He called me personally the day after surgery to tell me that once he was in there, he saw that I was bone on bone in the capsule of the joint where the imaging didn't show it. This confirmed that we made the right choice. My experience at the surgical center was amazing and I'm recovering better than anyone I know who has had a hip done. Three weeks post op and I already feel better than I did. The anterior approach with 6 inch spike, extra long screws, and double ball gave me a really stable, extra mobile hip. He gave me my life and career back!!! For those who might benefit from hearing my unique experience... I'm a 43 year old international yoga teacher trainer. Dr Wierks did a anterior hip replacement. After surgery, he said no weight restrictions, start phys therapy immediately, staples out in 14 days. His staff didn't schedule staple removal until 30 days, longer than any recommended, and failed to order any therapy. When called, they were rude, said that he prefers staples out in 21 days (even though he said to our face multiple times 14) and then postponed therapy until over 30 days out. There are serious miscommunication issues with Dr Wierks and his staff, which has led to very poor care, deceit, and it appears his staff trying to cover up their mistakes. I highly suggest finding anyone else. And in the end he won't even meet with the patient to discuss these issues, instead making us see his PA.

Listened attentively to my symptoms and what I have done regarding hip pain that has been going on for several months. Checked my ROM and it’s excellent, does not appear to be arthritis so we agreed next steps are an MRI and a cortisone injection to see if I can some pain control from inflammation. Very caring team, Kevin and Dr. Wierks. Highly recommend them.

Dr. Wierks does not care about his patients and the extreme pain they are in. He is very arrogant and is in the wrong profession. Picks and chooses who he wants as a patient and apparently doesn't care to do surgery. He just wants to hurry you out with pain meds and p/t. My hip was completely shot and he could care less. Worse experience I've ever had with a doctor. One star is too many!

I was referred to Dr. Wierks from MI Ortho for a second opinion and next steps. Love my experience with wierks and the staff at the surgery center and office. I had a pleasant experience when he was in holland as well. He is a surgeon who wants to help more people through research and is always looking for new ways to help people! Someone’s got to do it! I had labral repair and femeroplasty on my right hip in 2014 right after I graduated high school at age 17. Now 22 found out I have a fully torn almost displaced labrum, bone bruising and slight impingement + hip flexor pain in my left hip with a traction mri! I am just 4 days out of my second surgery on my left hip. This one is different than the first and I feel confident with the fact new protocol and new ways have come about! He believed my pain and told me it was completely up to me to have the surgery. I chose to have it done because I have full confidence he can help me. After the surgery he said “ I am very happy with how it went and I think I got rid of another source of your pain by doing “this and that” so I’m excited to see you recover and how it helps you and I think it was a great idea you listened to your body and got the surgery done now because there was quite a bit of damage” and trust me. I saw it! I trust him and regardless if he’s rude to fat people he’s a research surgeon and has to protect his research and studies. So do yours! Being overweight is the number one cause of all pain. So don’t blame him!! Just listen and follow his strict protocall and take care of your body!! Thank you wierks and team!! I'm an active 53 year old. I had a right knee arthroscopy (meniscectomy) on 3-8-19. Dr. Wierks provided a thorough explanation of what to expect before and after surgery. Before surgery my range of motion was limited and had a tooth ache pain in my knee. From the moment I woke up from surgery, my pain was completely eliminated and I achieved full range of motion and strength within a few days. I did not take one pain pill. Dr. Wierks has the golden touch!

Dr Wierks was touted as the best hip doctor around. He did not wait for reports to make a decision and was dismissive of any other doctors or input from medical professionals. He caused our son to continue to suffer physically and emotionally with his arrogant assumptions based on his perspective. His personal biases appear to impact his medical decisions. It is unfortunate that he appears to have made a name for himself without maintaining integrity for the position he has promoted himself to among colleagues. Dr. Wierks came highly recommended by not one but two doctors that I trust with my daughter’s life. He was very efficient, and is THE lead on hip arthroscopy. He did a fantastic job! My daughter recovered exactly as he said with minimal scarring. Just a little background info, my daughter had a labral hip tear from a gymnastics injury. She was a competitive gymnast for 8 years. After this surgery, she could continue competition if she wanted to. She chose to go into diving instead. The leg that was operated on is now stronger than her other leg. I really liked his “cut to the chase” demeanor. Also with the surgery that my daughter had, I can see it being difficult to perform and potentially a difficult recovery time if the patient is overweight. We had a really great experience. Pretty much I was told that if I was a smoker (which I am not), he refuses to perform surgery on me. Due to his lack of compassion and his arrogance and rudeness, I am going else where.

I would not recommend Dr Weirks. He recommended surgery for a labral tear in my left hip. I was, at the time, able to run up to 6 miles before I would feel pain in my hip. PT seemed to go well developed to where I should have been able to start running again but ended up in severe pain. Long story short less than a year after surgery I was told I have severe arthritis in that hip. Now I can't walk without limping from the pain. Disappointed doesn't come close to how I feel.
