When it is recommended that you would best be served if you had open heart surgery, I am sure you can appreciate how daunting this news can be, especially if you have had no symptoms which was my case. Because my husband has been a heart patient at New York Presbyterian for years, we are very familiar with and appreciative of the doctors whose life you put in their hands. Needless to say, there was no question in my mind as to where I needed to be. My cardiologist recommended Dr. Craig Smith if open heart was the procedure of choice and Dr. Smith it was. I felt safe over the few weeks leading up to the surgery and there were no questions about the choice of care. I am now home, healing and ever so grateful to Dr. Smith and his team. Operated on me . 5 bypass open heart surgery. Recovering now very rapidly.
Dr. Smith repaired my heart's mitral valve and did three bypasses on my coronary arteries in October 2018. The surgery was performed on a Tuesday afternoon and I was discharged on that Saturday at noon. I had no complications. The procedure was so uneventful that other than my (almost invisible) surgical scar, it was hard for me to believe that it was done (given that my previous symptoms disappeared). In my opinion, that is the mark of a great surgeon! Mitral valve repair is not for the faint of heart. It is much easier to replace a valve than to repair it. Dr. Smith took the time and effort to repair my valve. The benefit of this is that I do not need to take blood thinners nor antibiotics like I would if he had replaced my valve with a mechanical or biologic valve. I am extremely grateful for this!
