The visit was good. Doctor spoke loud enough for me to hear, recommended things and will follow up with him

Dr. Backous seems extremely knowledgeable, but tried to blow in and out of the appointment in 2 minutes. His sub-doc spent 10 minutes with me first, we got into some good details. Then Dr. Backous popped in, gave a 1-sentence semi-diagnosis that contradicted some of what I had told the sub-doc, and was halfway out the door before I stopped him for more details. Every question was the same - answer and I'm out the door. Wait, what about this? If I had let him leave the first time, I would have no idea what was going on. Even with my persistence... I'm still not sure what the heck just happened. I feel like I could get truly exceptional care from Dr. Backous, if he would just take a minute to pay attention to me.

I was extremely disappointed with their customer service. Very impolite. Also, Dr. Backas is rude, very inpatient, and recommended to me the wrong hearing device. He said I needed a Coular Implant, but my nerves are sethered. He was actually backing away towards the door when I was asking questions. Plus, I just received a letter, not a phone call regarding my personal information has been compromised. From a break-in. I am extremely relieved. I don't need to see him again! Maybe he is a great surgeon, so I have been told. But he is awful to speak with.

Really great professionals with wry sense of humor

Very friendly, uplifting and I felt I was in excellent care.

He is an unsung hero who took my brain tumour out. My trigermenal nerve pain is gone!!

My review of Dr Backous is long overdue. He's an amazing surgeon; he gave me the ability to hear again out of my left ear, and he quite possibly saved me from a much earlier demise with my second surgery. He's performed two surgeries on me. In the first, he removed a large mass out of my left ear canal; he then built an ear drum from skin graftss (as mine no longer existed) and he replaced my completely shattered hammer & anvil with a prosthetic. I could hear again, and actually quite well, after this surgery; but it didn't last long. I have chronic ear infection issues. The mass that Dr Backous had originally removed, resurfaced eventually, like within a matter of months. I saw him about a year after my original surgery, and that mass had come back with a vengeance. It had grown far larger than it had been before, and it had nearly eaten its way though my skull, approaching my brain. He removed that mass again, along with my entire ear canal, in order to make sure it would not return. I've returned twice since, for ear cleanings. Currently I am in the process of looking at getting a hearing aid device through his clinic. He gave m the ability to hear again, in stereo, which I had missed for years; and I cannot recommend him highly enough, especially for those who have given up on hoping to be able to hear again. That's where I was. And I ended up getting some of that hearing back, and getting my life extended in the process. My review of Dr Backous is long overdue. Excellent surgeon for Cochlear implant! He did one side 7-8 years ago, and going back for the other side.

Dr Backous is an extremely qualified neurotologist, was very friendly, and gave me good information. I was trying tobdeide ifca ciclear implant in my right ear was appropriate at this point in time. I saw him at the end of the day as his last appointment so he was in a bit of a hurry & I didn't want to keep him any later than i had so I didn't follow up with my questions. But I felt I certainly could at a later date.

I was extremely impressed with Dr. Backous listening to and then addressing all of my concerns. I did not feel rushed at all. I was also impressed with the office staff. It was a good visit.

Overall the office staff at Puget Sound ENT were very friendly and helpful. Dr. Backous, however, spent very little time in the room with me, and was rushed and condescending as I was explaining my symptoms. He interrupted me a handful of times, and twice told me "stop diagnosing" as I was explaining my symptoms (how is saying I feel inner ear and sinus pressure diagnosing myself?!). He was quick to overgeneralize my symptoms to "everyone has allergies, especially this time of year," spent no time ACTUALLY LISTENING to my concerns and experiences, and had no compassion for the impact my chronic sinus issues have on my daily life. I respect that he is the expert, but he had no respect for the fact that my symptoms have been increasingly severe and that I am the one living with whatever is going on. Today was a total waste of both of our time, and I left feeling both frustrated and belittled.

I was helping my mother-in law few times by joining her in the room. She is hard of hearing. I tried to explain the reason for our visit when he interrupted me and said "Time out" and made time out gesture. During the 5 min he barely spend in the room he also told me I am not listening to him. He pulled the Covid excuse for anything that happened to her and refused to listen to me for full 1 min when I tried to explain the changes in my mother-in-law health. His behavior was insulting, rude and disrespectful. He needs to be reported which will be my next step. I don't anyone to feel this way after a visit. It put my mother-in-law and me into tears from this experience.

The reception staff and assisting medical staff as well as Dr. Backous were all very friendly professional and courteous. I felt very comfortable and safe which is very important to me.

Dr. Backous is a talented, knowledgeable medical doctor. If he takes you seriously, he will treat you well and be thorough. If he doesn’t take you seriously, he will do nothing.

I thought the service and care was top notch. Had to take some hearing tests and see Dr Backous. Never had to wait for anything. I am going to switch my current provider for hearing to this office.

He was the most knowledgeable dr I have ever met he was thorough and communication was spot on. Dr backups is the best of the best.

His directness and easy manner puts you at ease. Like his conservative approach of getting more test results before laying out the options.

I found Dr. Backous to be very informative, understanding and a great listener. I was nervous going in and right from the beginning, he put me at ease. I appreciated his candor and demeanor, very professional.

My appt was a follow up after cochlear implant. Told him I have excruciating pain. He tells me it's because the implant is pressing a nerve. He went on to accuse me of not doing physical therapy. Told him I have been doing pt for my bad neck for over 20 yrs. He said I am not doing enough. I told him at my first visit about how bad my arthritic neck was. I had also asked for extra neck support during surgery. The anesthesiologist rolled up a hand towel placed it under my neck. When I awoke the towel was flat under my head. I had neck pain. They ignored my plea for pain relief, told me my husband had a prescription. It was in my take home papers, for a medicine I am allergic to . I told him I want implant moved away from that nerve. After making it all my fault, He then tells me I have a bad attitude. I left his office in tears. He said I have to wait up to a year with this pain. He didn't tell me why. I still have this neck and head pain.

He Is a great medical professional and a great friend. He is always personable and funny. I couldn’t dream up anyone better.

Dr. Backous is a talented, gifted man and I have trusted him with two ear surgeries. I cannot recommend him highly enough. When you want the best, this is it.

It was just a bit overwhelming talking about having surgery to put in an implant, but if it will stop the tinnitus and the feeling that my ear needs to pop as well as giving me hearing back on that side I am willing to consider that option. Dr.Backous couldn’t have been nicer.

Thank goodness for Dr. Backous! I couldn’t have found a better ENT to perform a surgery that I had given up hope for. I now have a new eardrum since 2017 and have no more worries about keeping my ear safe from something as simple as taking a daily shower and not getting water in my ear. I’d had a perforated eardrum for 50 years and no hope of repair until Dr Backous reassured me that he could help and help he did. Dr Backous is tops in my book not only as the best surgeon but as a caring, compassionate person who really wants to help improve the quality of ones life. I’ve been back to see Dr Backous for check ups when I felt nervous something wasn’t feeling just right in my ear and for earwax removal and he’s always Welcoming and reassuring no matter how insignificant my concern may be especially to a busy doctor. Very informative visit thankful for your kindness ??

This was a follow-up visit regarding a chronic condition. My concerns were appropriately addressed by Dr. Backous and a monitoring plan was outlined.

Healthgrades says Dr. Backous accepts new patients. After futile visits to a neurologist and two otolaryngologists in Tacoma & Gig Harbor, I was referred by my PCP to Dr. Backous for dizziness I have suffered for over a year. When I called to make appt, I was told that new patients must see his fellow, Dr. S. So, I went to Dr. S. (June 2021) who did the same things as previous docs: hearing test and simple questions. no curiosity, no tests, no diagnosis, no further referral, no followup; i.e., no interest.

Dr Backous is an amazing physician and skilled diagnostician. He thoughtfully advised me (18 years ago) not to have surgery on my ear even though several other surgeons wanted to operate. This turned out to be a great decision and I am forever grateful for his wisdom and integrity.

Dr. Backous should be avoided at all costs. It took me several weeks for my mother to get an appointment with Dr. Backous. Once at the appointment we waited for over an hour past our original appointment time before we were finally seen by Dr. Backous. Dr. Backous and Puget Sound ENT are an efficient and professional group. Unfortunately I have not had a great experience because my cochlear implant buzzes when I hear speech or music, very frustrating. It remains to be seen whether or not the situation will be resolved, and in the meantime my professional life is impacted very negatively. I have found the surgical residents and nurses to be the most helpful and willing to take the time to listen and explain. Dr. Backous and Puget Sound ENT are an efficient and professional group. His candor and deportment were much appreciated, after dealing 15 weeks with a host of healthcare professionals that could not provide a diagnosis and care plan other than referral to the next higher level physician. It is definitely true, as stated by the neurologist that referred me, Dr. Backous is a must smarter specialist that is the caliber needed. We were referred from another ENT and Dr. Backous and his team were professional, prompt, direct, and outstanding! During Covid I was not able to be at the hospital during my husbands 9 1/2 hr surgery and his team kept me informed and I cannot thank them enough! Would highly recommend him for surgery! Dr. Backous was very knowledgeable about vertigo issues. I like how he wanted to start with preventative things first by looking at my diet and recommending a great dietician who specializes in vertigo patients. He also knew of a medication that I hadn’t tried to stop vertigo before getting a full attack. I have had this for 15 years and no doctor had told me about this medication. I have full confidence in him as my doctor for my ENT issues going forward. Dr. Backous was very knowledgeable about vertigo issues. I was given 4 ENT specialist recommendations. I did my research and picked Dr. Backous. My 1st visit was a little rocky out of the gate & I questioned my decision! I felt Dr. Backous was being short with me as I tried to explain my symptoms! Doctors are supposed to listen to their patients even the minutia! In the end I felt more comfortable & feel I made the right decision to go with Dr. Backous. I’m hopeful he can help me get some hearing restored!

Dr. Backous is not only a great surgeon but excellent at follow up.

After a long trip to Edmonds, I checked in 15 minutes before my scheduled time. After a short wait I was placed in a small examination room and shortly thereafter Dr. Singh came in and asked a few preliminary questions. Shortly thereafter, Dr. Backus entered and told me that I would need two vaccinations and a MRI plus a statement from my Hematologist that a blood clot had been dissolved before next visit.

Doctor made me feel comfortable and within minutes we decided I didn't need surgery. I had 4 seperate appointments with a different ENT specialist and he couldn't decide what needed be done. Dr. Backous knows what hes doing and I felt very comfortable being in his care. I highly recommend him!!!

We are so fortunate to have the world-class care that Dr. Backous provides to his patients in Puyallup. During my visit he diagnosed me with something I had been struggling with for years. He was able to quickly identify the problem and then took tome to fully explain the pathology and the treatment. I trusted Dr Backous 9 years ago with an ear tumor removal. Then had a Baha installed by him.. which no longer accommodated my hearing loss after 4 years. NOW due to sudden hearing drop in the once good ear I had an urgent appnt with him. I had to explain that I can't tolerate more oral steroids in my system which can increase bone loss. So he had a colleague perform an INTRATEMPANIC injection of the steroid to possibly alleviate swelling that could have caused the suddenly hearing loss. Next will be an MRI to help diagnose the problem. And 3rd a follow up audiology test and possible 2nd injection. He is knowledgeable and no none sense. Quick yes. And possibly abrupt so you have to press for your answers.

I need to follow the steps to get approval for the cochlear transplant the first being a MRI which I hope the doctor ordered at providence st Mary’s in Walla Walla

Great doctor- very knowledgeable and thorough. His staff is amazing too. He diagnosed and did a complicated surgery to correct a rare condition. Would highly recommend!

As a patient with an ear issue it is important that I have Doctor that not only successfully treats me, but takes the time to 'communicate' with me. Takes time to explain what has been found but equally takes the time to 'listen' to you so that a comprehensive evaluation and treatment can be determined. To these aspects, Dr. Backous is a 'gold mine', a rare Dr. who listens. This eliminates a lot of apprehension on the patient side of not being heard. Very happy that I was fortunate enough to have him, staff, and office to accept me as a patient and determine the correct course of treatment.

I seen Dr. Backous for pulsatile tinnitus. He needed more information so I was referred for imaging. Dr. explained to me what he could. After imaging I will return.

I’ve known Dr. Backous for nearly 5 years now since he was the only Dr that actually repaired my ear. He’s efficient in his work and is highly passionate about it. His bed side manor was professional and is highly respectful. I would recommend him to anyone with ear problems, cause you will not regret it.

Dr. Backous is a very good doctor. I've had one surgery with him and soon will have another. He's friendly and professional. He will answer any questions I have and he does suggest different options, so I never feel like surgery is being pushed on me. I wish I had come to him 20 years ago as I had near constant ear pain! The upcoming surgery will help my hearing-quite a bit he thinks-but I will be happy with just being able to tell which direction sound comes from! His staff is efficient and friendly as well. The only negative thing about him is that his practice is too far away for him to be my regular ear doctor--darn it! He really is a terrific doctor!

I went in intending to hear that all that could be done had been done in the last 2 surgeries. I was also prepared to call the surgery off & live with the spasms. Dr. Backus told me the prior surgeries were what is supposed to fix the problem. He found that I have damage in the "not standard" areas.
