I don’t think enough positive can be said. Dr. Dorward performed a micro discectomy on my lower back (L5-S1). I herniated a disc performing CPR on a woman I had found who depended, on the first night of my Cancun vacation. Less than 24 hours after my injury I practically couldn’t walk. I didn’t know it at the time, but what I was experiencing was terribly debilitating sciatica. On a food say the pain was a 6 or 7/10 and it traveled from my lower back down my buttock and stopped at my knee. On many other worse days, it would travel all the way down to my ankle and would be a 9 or 9/10. That is not an exaggeration. This was truly the worst pain I’ve ever experienced in my entire life. After doing everything in my power to avoid surgery (multiple chiropractors, physical therapy, two epidural steroid injections, acupuncture, etc.) I finally decided to seek the help of a neurosurgeon. After getting a referral from my doctor, a friend recommended Dr. Dorward to me. While it did take time for an open appointment to become available, I finally was able to see the doctor approximately 7 months after the injury. He sat with me for over an hour. He explained in detail what the injury was, what the prognosis was with and without surgery, he recommended books that help with overall spine strength and health, and overall I very much felt like he listened to as well as educated me. He told me that if I would like, he would perform a micro discectomy. In no way did I feel pressured or uninformed. His bedside manner was truly amazing. He explained the procedure in detail and said we’ll get it on the books. We scheduled the surgery for April 7th but COVID forced us to reschedule for June 15th, which was a week ago from today. I went into surgery with a pain level around a 7/10, which was my norm for almost a year. I awoke from the surgery WITH NO PAIN. My nerve pain was gone and I mean GONE. The incision was also not even noticeable as it relates to pain. The only pain I had, which was more of an ache was the muscles just under and surrounding the incision. That was 7 days ago and I still have not felt so much as a 1/10 in pain. Soreness exists. But, at very manageable levels. All in all, I can’t speak highly enough about Dr. Dorward. If for some reason that changes in my follow ups, I’ll update this review. But that’s highly unlikely. Thank you Dr. Dorward for your incredible skill and demeanor!!! In the beginning, I had 6 cervical herniated discs starting at C2, 3 4,5,6,7, which resulted in barely being able to hold my head up, to at least 2 short 10 second long - very scary episodes of neck down temporary paralysis, due to compression and pinched nerves, ongoing extreme hyper sensitivity of my upper backside of my neck, ongoing neck, shoulder, arm, to hand, finger left side of body medium to severe spasms, which also suffered severe ongoing headaches, unable to drive my vehicle for 6 plus months straight, I could not sleep well at all, was in miserable pain daily, all day and night, terrified I'd end up permanently paralyzed. This guy in begining first appointment said I needed surgery asap. He ran more MRI images, and I took him the extensive current MRI test results by discs taken at my local Emergency room & another ordered by my doctor. First appointment went good, and was suppose to have surgery and asap. He said he would call me, he did not call the time of the day he said he would. I called his office, then he called me back. I had another appointment to further address the details of my surgery and related to him that I had began to experience extreme high blood pressure requiring being put on three different high blood pressure pills and 5 pills a day, and even then something was causing my blood pressure to raise to very high levels, causing me to be seen in the emergency rooms at least 3 to 5 times a week. There was also no doubt, the cervical compression was severe and pinched nerves were affecting my blood pressure. I had that appointment, it went by and still no surgery date, he was suppose to call me with a surgery saye. That did not happen. I called again, to find out about my surgery date. And called repeatedly, he never returned my phone calls. I had a severe episode one night about 2 weeks later, where my face on my right side went numb. I called his office to reach the surgeon on duty, to let him know and ask what I should do. At this point I was mortified, as anyone would be. The surgeon advised me, I went to my local hospital to. E checked for a stroke. No stroke but severe compression, concusional syndrome due to the compression, and was advised the cervical surgery must be done urgently, asap, STAT due to my ongoing serious medical condition and deteriorating worsening symptoms. I again called this guys office to let them know what I had been advised by my local small town doctor at the emergency room. He never called me back this time either. I left numerous calls asking him to please call me back, and let's move forward with the necessary cervical surgery. He left me hanging again for almost 2 weeks, and by this time, I called and asked his nurse that either he needed to return my calls or if he would refer me to another one of his colleagues that I could get the surgery I so badly medically needed. Next thing I know, I got a phone call from a woman in the admin office, informing me that this guy was ending my being his patient, and she said he refused to refer me to another surgeon at Barnes/Wash U. I explained to her my ongoing experiences, which went on for 6 plus long painful. Scary MONTHS, at that point, and she said this guy made it clear to her, that not only would he not see me anymore but that he and his colleagues also refused to transfer me as a patient to one of the other surgeons there. This was unbelievable, an absolute nightmare, this guy not only failed me as a patient, but the jerk also made it impossible for me to get any spinal surgery at this hospital. I do not recommend this guy, and feel empathy for anyone who see's this guy, because he not only failed me as a patient but he was vendictive, which was not and is not how you treat any patient, especially one who requires immediate surgery and has such painful and serious symptoms as I had. I'd heed caution and read the bad reviews, because this appears to be his charachter according to other ba
I heard a lot of great things about this doctor but my experience was totally different. The first visit was awesome and I decided to have the revision surgery that was recommended. After the surgery this doctor fell to return calls or answer any questions I had. I have left message after message for three weeks straight attempting to get answers concerning my pain and MRI results. After three weeks of no response I give up. How can you not respond to your patient?

I have been calling his line for 2 weeks trying to get a appoitment with no call back.
Neglected to follow up with planned care! Canceled long awaited appointments on a whim! No regard for inconvenience of mishandled appointments!
For my wife Kathy she was a patient, you could not get any better help. This mans work is excellent.
Dr Dorward is so caring. You can tell he's compassionate and cares for his patients. He took his time with me and explained everything in detail. I would highly recommend. Thanks, Dr Dorward
Dr. Dorward has operated on my neck and lower back and is without any doubt a person whose concern and talent is second to no one's. He is brilliant and deeply cares about people, both patients and their loved ones, taking time to explain what to expect post surgery and answering follow up questions months afterwards. He literally gave me back the ability to walk and return to a normal and active life to include hiking, white water rafting and working out in the gym. Dr. Dorword surrounds himself with an excellent staff, with particular mention going to Karen Browne, Nurse Practitioner. I have recommended Dr. Dorword to several people and will continue to do so. I am very grateful for the surgery that Dr. Dorward performed to remove tumor from my spine. Dr. Dorward and the neurosurgery team were excellent and kept in touch with me after the surgery arranging the appointments to see me through my recovery. Dr. Dorward is a very talented neurosurgeon and took my case on an emergency basis.
I am so overdue for this review. Dr Dorward operated on me 2 years ago. He is an amazing Surgeon, I would highly recommend him to anyone with severe back problems. I have given his name to many of my patients who have had bad outcomes from other physicians .
Dr. Dorward performed an anterior cervical discectomy fusion on me in November, 2018. I walked out of the hospital completely void of pain for the first time in many months. I was given pain meds on release from the hospital. I promptly took them to the police station for destruction. It’s been four months since my surgery and I can honestly say that I haven’t felt this good in years. Dr. Dorward gave me my life back. He truly cares about people. He’s a top notch surgeon.
This is a new kind of Doctor. Not the old breed of so many poor communicating surgeons. Dr Dorward is very skilled, compassionate and kindly personable. My neck surgery is huge success and I’m grateful for his excellent care. Thank you Dr. Dorward!

I was referred to Dr Dorward by my neurosurgeon, as I have a very complex back condition. I left numerous messages with Dawn (med assistant) none were returned. I finally went to office to talk to someone, and the office manager Rhonda, has been most helpful. Since my 1st surgery in April was cancelled 4 days prior, due to Ins refusing to pay for the BMP . The precert dept submitted the claim wrong. I'm still dealing with appeals. I have BEGGED to talk to Dr before my major surgery, and can't
