About Mr. John G Bortz
Reviews for Mr. John G Bortz
After several years of visiting with a number of doctors to address a problem I had with constant tearing from my eyes, Dr. Bortz was the first doctor to correctly diagnose and offer me a solution to this problem. He is consultative with his patients, puts their health and well-being first, treats his patients with compassion, and he’s a skilled surgeon. I finally have relief for an issue with which I suffered for 10 years. Thank you, Dr. Bortz for your wonderful care. You made a huge difference in the quality of my life. ????????????????????????
Dr. Bortz performed an entropion on my right eye several months ago. His diagnosis was quick and the operation was not successful. I waited a long time to write this review in order not to be hasty and "give it time to work" but it didn't. I understand that this is not unusual, and it is not why I am writing this negative review. Dr. Bortz's manners are appalling, He quickly becomes defensive if not insulting when asked a question. His responses are flippant and derisive. The inflammation was such after the operation, that I dared to go and ask him if it was "normal", his response was personal and arrogant. When the results of the operation didn't give me relief from the constant tearing, I didn't even bother to go for a consult or follow up, as I didn't want to subject myself to this ill mannered man and the unlikelihood that he could help me further. I have planned to write this review for some time - however never too late to compliment. Dr Bortz was recommended to my husband after we had seen many others doctors who could not provide us with answers. Upon examining my husband Dr Bortz was able to pinpoint his affliction as progressive subnuclear palsy (PSP). Despite the fact that we have since learned he is a “ textbook” case none of the professionals (in the various specialties )we visited for two years were able to make the diagnosis. Thank you Dr Bortz - your keen observation gave us an answer to what is going on and allowed us to stop running around making meaningless appointments. We now know what we are dealing with and although is no cure it gives us understanding and. direction. I have planned to write this review for some time - however never too late to compliment. Dr. Bortz and his staff are kind, professional and attentive. A kind and welcoming practice which clearly has a lot of patients, due to the high value of care provided. After a scare of a possible infection, Dr. Bortz examined me and expedited my care. I had an issue with my left eye due to serious trauma, in a life threatening accident. I have retinal scaring, and required plastic reconstruction of my orbital floor and rim. Dr. Bortz is the only ophthalmologist I trust with my care. I would recommend anyone to his practice. Amazing Dr. Highly recommended. The procedure he performed to correct my Ptosis has changed my life.
Dr. Bortz was absolutely amazing! My daughter was bit by a dog and during this scary experience he was informative, patient, and clearly an expert. He saved her eye and vision through surgery. In the visits to his office after surgery, he was very kind and reassuring with my child. I feel lucky that he was there to help my child in such a time of need.
We arrived at his office promptly . Got treated like trash between the receptionist and the Dr .Don’t know which was worse .wouldn't send my worst enemy to this . Beware he and his receptionist neither is worth the stress.
Professional, a gentleman. Expertise is unquestionable

Last September my husband was diagnosed with an inward turning lower lid (entropian) of his left eye. His Surgeon scheduled him for corrective surgery. Shortly after the surgery, his condition reappeared causing considerable irritation and swelling. By January both of his eyes were turned inward. Corrective surgery was performed again, without successful results. The surgeon promised to consult with his peers and get back to my husband, which he never did. It took 2 months to get an appointment with another eye surgeon, who declined to operate since the surgery had been performed twice without success. This left my husband in considerable discomfort and pain, disrupting normal vision. Determined to find a solution, my husband called every caregiver we knew to find a champion. Dr. Bortz' name was given to us by by a retinal specialist that we know and respect. My husband saw Dr. Bortz in his office within a few days for a complete history and thorough examination of both eyes. Dr. Bortz also asked for copies of my husband's prior surgical records concerning the entropian surgeries that had been performed. Dr. Bortz agreed to operate again on my husband's eyes, with full disclosure that he would probably have to undo the surgical work done prior, and see what he could do to correct this, with no guarantees. He was so bright, caring, and genuinely interested that my husband readily agreed. After repairing his left eye, Dr. Bortz and my husband were so satisfied and happy with the results, Dr. Bortz went on to do my husband's right eye as well. Dr. Bortz is more than a great surgeon. He is a teacher of excellence instead of volume or speed of outcome. He is a true champion, he has a great sense of humor, and inspires your trust deservedly. My husband is contributing this review with the hope that you learn of Dr. Bortz without going through the disappointment and long discomfort he experienced. He's the best!! While he may have skills and experience that serve him well as a surgeon, I found him dismissive, condescending, and decidedly unsympathetic. His questions were curt, almost badgering, and he was not interested in answering mine. Perhaps he's only helpful in cases where the diagnosis is clear and easy, or an expensive operation is needed. I left feeling insulted and hopeless.

Dr. Bortz performed emergency surgery on my son for an orbital abscess. The infection was traveling toward his brain. Dr. Bortz saved his life. During our follow up visits he was very caring and compassionate. I cannot say enough about how grateful we are that he was there during this very critical time .

I fell and was diagnosed with a global fracture under the left eye. Dr. Bortz was concerned that the eyeball could sink back inside the skull. We scheduled surgery to correct the problem in August of 2016. The surgery was very successful and my eyeball is almost perfect! Dr. Bortz diagnosed the problem and solved the problem to my satisfaction. I would recommend him for any type of eye plastic surgery. Richard from Croton on Hudson
I found him to be friendly, courteous, caring, and informative. He took the time to explain all aspects of the procedure and I felt very confident having him do the surgery. The results were exactly as I hoped for.

This guy is NASTY: confrontational and verbally aggressive to the point of being abusive. He has no right treating patients.

Very hardcore surgeon. Not very interested in the patient or the process. I've found him and his office staff to be lackluster in their responses to questions and general support. Sometimes abrasive. Lacks humility (which may be a useful trait in a surgeon)

I had an appt. and they cancel before confirming with me, the lady was not pleasant at all, she sounded like she was fed up talking to patients and it was only 10:30 in the morning but yet is Friday. I myself being in the medical field find this unacceptable.
