Dr. Shelbourne and his staff are absolutely amazing. Best knee surgeon in the country. Couldn’t be more pleased!

Dr. Shelbourne has worked on me and several in my family. He is the best at his trade....KNEES. He listens, he explains and he knows what he is talking about. Follow-up is great and his therapy division is top-notch.

Dr Shelbourne reconstructed my ACL 18 years ago when I was a freshman in high school. I never had a single problem with my knee until I tore a meniscus a few months ago on a hiking trip. Following my X-ray and MRI I have been repeatedly told by numerous doctors and specialists that they have never seen a better looking knee post ACL reconstruction. Without a doubt I know that I have Dr Shelbourne to thank for that. He did a damn good job ????

Dr. Don Shelbourne fixed my son's knee after 2 other Doctor surgeries failed. I could not be happier with the results. My opinion he is the best knee surgeon you can get!

Dr. Shelbourne is regarded as one of the Top surgeons in the World and as a retired professional athlete who has had a ton of surgeries, I can say without question, He is one of the best! Only a select few in the World have reputations even close. And BTW, I posted this because I was shocked to see a couple negative comments. My experience tells me that people just don't know the risks involved in any surgery or even more so they say they do the rehab but not like they should. Post surgery re-hab is critical to fully rehabilitate from any injury. I am in no way related to Dr. Shelbourne, I just have over 25 years of injuries and his knowledge and expertise has been critical to my success. Our son appreciated Dr. Shelbourne's honesty and willingness to answer all of his questions about his injury, his surgery and his rehab, as well as his ability to play football in college. It's been 18 months since his surgery and he's back to playing the sport he loves.

Shelbourne performed autograft patellar tendon ACL repair in '98. Patellar tendon became lax at harvest site and have suffered progressively worse patellar subluxation ever since. While trying full flexion at 6 months post-op, bone plug pulled out. Bad outcomes from good surgeons can happen, but my complaints are (1) he changed his prognosis and whole demeanor after he didn't want to deal with me and the surgical failure, and (2) he tried to blame what may have been his bad tunnel angle on my PT compliance (I aggressively rehabbed that knee out-of-state, and I've never seen "secure bone plug" as a PT goal). Within a couple of years, he changed from saying something like "you'll be as good as new and are too young to not get the surgery" to "your knee isn't that unstable, chance of developing arthritis is the same with or without surgery, and you should focus on your kids". Take his enthusiastic prognoses with a grain of salt, expect him to change if things go bad -- expect full cya and blame on you -- and really think hard about whether you want to risk your knee cap swelling and popping out of place for the rest of your life (consult a couple of allograft specialists too). Absolutely fantastic! Dr Shelbourne and his staff are top notch. If I need to see a knee doctor again, I would travel from Connecticut to Indiana to deal with him. Everyone is extremely professional, polite , compassionate and knowledgeable. Dr. Shelbourne's bedside manner anytime at was at the clinic was first rate :) Thanks for getting me back to walking without a limp, full strength for hiking and biking WITHOUT surgery!!! I was not happy with my experience. I'm 2 years post-op and I am still not close to 100%, as Dr. Shelborne promised I would be (he promised I'd be running half marathons again by this spring, I'm still not even close). I stuck to my rehab religiously but this procedure didn't work. He told me that 100% of the patients who stuck to their rehab had a full recovery. Still waiting. Secondly, I did not get much attention at all from "Doc". My PT guy was excellent, but after the initial consultation and when I committed to go with him, I spent perhaps 4 minutes total talking to Doc. I bet if I were one of the more elite athletes whose pictures he posts up on his wall I would have gotten proper attention, conversation, and information, but since I am (was) just a recreational (but fairly serious) athlete, I got the minimum time and attention from him. Finally, after the surgery didn't work I started to go to other professionals and they were angry and horrified that surgery had been done - their diagnosis was that proper functional and strength training would have solved my problem, and wouldn't have left the scar tissue surgery did. I am now just hoping/praying that I can yet get a near-full recovery, so I can run around with my son without pain/injury as he grows up. I can't say I wouldn't recommend him - I don't know enough to say that. But I would say manage your expectations about "bedside manner", and do your research to ensure this is the ONLY and LAST resort for you before you commit to this. I was not happy with my experience.
