Dr. Mark Alan Elkus

I recently had total knee replacement surgery by Dr. Elkus. Before the surgery he and his staff were very informative, eased my fears, and the surgery was a success. He was very caring and gave me post surgery instructions for home and outpatient therapy. His staff has answered my questions since surgery and been very supportive. When it is time for the other knee replacement, I will used Dr. Elkus. Also, my other doctors in Birmingham, have highly recommended Dr. Elkus, so he is well known in the medical community.

I just visited my doctor (Dr Mark Elkus) 2 weeks after a full hip replacement surgery. I believe he is the best orthopaedic surgeon in the south east! I am walking with out a Walker only 2 weeks after the surgery! I have had many comments including from Dr Elkus saying I am walking so well they cant tell which hip I had replaced! From a long term review: I had this same surgery on my other hip with very similar results! That surgery was done 15 years ago. Dr Elkus is the most caring, encouraging, humble doctor I have seen in many years!

Dr. Elkus has performed Right and Left Hip Replacements, Left knee replacement and handled a Fractured Pelvis and Sacrum on my husband....he is the best and cares a lot for his patients and family members. Highly recommend!!!!

Tremendous visit - as always - with Dr. Elkus and his staff. His staff is the icing on the cake, to me. Whenever I recommend Dr. Elkus, and several of my friends have used him, I always conclude by telling them that he as ZERO turnover in his staff for all the years I have been going to see him. Over the years, Dr. Elkus has treated me for several minor injuries, but in 2018, he rebuilt my shoulder and every that could have been wrong with it, was. Today I dig post holes regularly, punch in T posts, and have built two horse stalls with 2x12x12 lumber - all by myself. I recommend him unequivocally!!!

Dr Elkus is the best. He calmed my nerves when I asked many questions. I knew I’d selected the right surgeon after my initial visit. My knee replacement was so easy and it’s so fantastic to not be living in pain 24/7.

Dr Elkus did an emergency hip replacement due to blood supply had been cut off to my right hip and the joint was necrotic. I have had no problems despite the shape the hip was in prior to surgery. Dr Elkus sent me to Lakeshore for a few days then home for out pt PT/OT. I am doing well and looking forward to a left knee replacement in a few months after I am completely recovered from my recent surgery. I would recommend Dr Elkus to anyone facing orthopedic surgery.

I broke my hip. The emergency room was busy and after they knew I had a broken hip they left me alone - waiting for Dr Elkus.. When he arrived he realized I had been poorly treated and he got the staff on the ball. My whole experience was that Dr Elkus was on top of everything. Easy bedside manner and was a great communicator!

Dr Elkus did shoulder surgery for me. Old age and a lifetime of hard work. He repaired several problems from a torn bicep to a rotator cuff tear. I had been in pain,weakness in that arm and limited range of motion about 2 years. He and his staff are the best of the best. 6 weeks post up I'm pain free. PT will soon return me to normal function (if not better). GREAT experience start to finish. Dr Elkus is also just a "nice guy". What more do you need.

Dr. Elkus performed an outpatient hip replacement at St Vincent Hospital. I was amazed I was able to walk out of the hospital. He arranged for excellent home health and physical therapy. Two weeks after the surgery I walked unassisted into his office to have the staples and stiches removed. For any orthopedic surgery I will definitely be back. Thank you Dr Elkus for the great job and care.

Dr, Elkus has done knee replacements on both of my knees. He explained the procedure, was very detail oriented - went out of his way to make sure that I was as comfortable as possible in the hospital & at home. I highly recommend him and his staff. Excellent!

Dr. Elkus did my total hip replacement in 2016, I don't have anything bad to say about him or his staff. They were great from beginning to end. I also had great therapy's. I didn't remember hurting because he made sure I was not in any pain after surgery. I recommend him go and try him you want be disappointed.

Dr Elkus did my total Hip in 2019 and a total knee in 2020. Both surgeries went great and my physical therapist said they looked amazingly good. I highly recommend Dr Elkus and his staff is awesome also. .

One of the most dedicated physicians around. His practice is not a factory. He and his staff truly care about their patients.

Dr elkus is a great doctor. I had been misdiagnosed and sent to him for hip replacements. He diagnosed my pain as coming from back and sent me to Nesbit pain and Associates. They confirmed his diagnosis and performed MILD Procedure on my back. After suffering for a very long time I am doing great. Highly recommend this doctor

Eight years ago Dr. Mark Elkus replaced both of my knees in same day. I have had no negative issues in the eight years. The scars are barely visible. I have recommended Dr. Elkus to an impressive number of people seeking knee replacements. None have ever complained. All have had great success and thanked me for the recommendation. If I could go back and start over, I would not have my knees replaced unless Dr. Elkus did it.

Several of my friends recommended Dr. Elkus two years ago for some knee injections. I was so happy to have found him. I went through those treatments perfect. Nothing to it. Then January 13th of this year 2020 I had to have rotator cuff and bicep surgery. Torn both pretty bad. I am not kidding on this. I have not had one ounce of pain to date, oh my muscle is a little sore but I can work out in the yard and get sore and it has been 3 weeks since surgery and I have not taken one pain pill! Dr. Elkus is wonderful. His staff is wonderful. I will use him for everything I need that he deals with. My sister in law will be undergoing surgery by him in a few weeks and I know she will be just fine! I feel so blessed that my neighbor suggested him! I was diagnosed by a quack Orthopedic who said I had extreme, degenerative arthritis in my hip. In 4 months I could not walk. I finally got a second opinion from Dr. Elkus. He found that my hip joint had disintegrated and I was walking around on a stick grinding on my hip socket. I, at that point, was begging for help, in excruciating pain. He replaced my hip. I was walking around hours after my surgery. My knee joint was affected because of the bad hip which he replaced 5 months later. I have my life back. Saw Dr. Elkus for L total knee. I had the R done 5 years ago w/different phys. What a different experience. I am retired after working 25 yrs as an RN. The 2 comments made by others that he was not highly thought of by the medical community was not my exp. He is very well respected. His main goal is your health and recovery. He’s going to be truthful about your prognosis & what you can expect from him & the surgery. Sometimes that’s not what you want to hear. As with any ortho procedure there will be pain involved. At my 1st consult, he said it hurt him to look at my x-ray. At my 3 mos post-op visit he said he couldn’t tell which knee had surgery by my walk. There was no limp and I was going up & down the stairs w/o pain. I am so grateful. One thing to mention, a device that provided cold & compression was placed on my leg immed. after surg & for 3wks post-op helped tremendously with pain control & recovery

Dr. Elkus first treated me after I had a lawnmower accident. The orthopedic Dr where I live kept telling me there was nothing wrong when I had a huge hematoma on my leg and the pain! I went in to see Dr. Elkus he admitted me and did emergency surgery! He saved my leg! He has also done two knee replacements.

Had knee replacement in june. was up active by august great Doctor, Great bed side manner. Cares for his patients. Pain was not near what people told me

Dr. Elkus is simply amazing! My Dad had a terrible fall, broke his femur and Dr. Elkus was the surgeon of rotation and for that I know we were Blessed with the Best! From the day we met Dr. Elkus, he has shown nothing but professionalism, knowledge, kindness and a superb bedside manner. He truthfully answers all of our questions and always gives us pros/cons and possibilities of outcomes. Dr. Elkus is not afraid to take time with his patients and that seems lost in the art of Medicine these days. I would not recommend any other orthopedic surgeon over Dr. Elkus and plan to visit him myself in the coming months.

Dr. Elkus is my doctor, my husbands, one of my neighbors and three of my friend's doctor. I can not imagine going to anyone else. He is the kindest, caring doctor you can imagine, not to mention very intelligent in his field of medicine. I give him 10 stars!! His staff is wonderful also. I had knee injections and yes it was scary but I never felt any pain. I will be with him as long as he is in practice.

Had five ortho consults before deciding to use Dr. Elkus for my total knee replacement. I am so very thankful I used Dr. Elkus. I will never use another orthopedic. Surgery on 6/25, off all pain meds and back to work on 7/5, and I feel great!!! Every day I have a little more “bend” and flexibility. Also, Dr. Elkus has the best staff around. Dr Elkus and his entire staff are top notch. They are attentive, patient and always give you their full attention! He replaced my knee and now I’m kicking mysel for not doing it sooner. Dr Elkus has alway been friendly & caring. You couldn't ask for a better doctor. He was agressive in finding the cause of my problem and helped me. Since, I have taken family to him and referred many. I remember when he was in practice with his father, he was referred to me by my OB/GYN that thought very highly of him. Anytime I need an ortho he's the one I'm going to. Couldn't ask for a better doctor. His staff is fantastic as well and friendly.

Dr. Mark Elkus is highly respected in the medical community . Always treating his patients and staff with the utmost respect! I would trust Dr. Elkus with any of my family members and would recommend him to anyone time and time again. The attention to detail in and out of surgery really sets dr. Elkus about others. As an orthopedic physical therapist of 33 years, I can without a doubt attest to the fact that Dr. Mark Elkus is top-notch. Not only does he provide excellent care, thorough examinations, and comprehensive patient education, he is compassionate and truly cares for his patients. I have not only treated his patients but have been one myself, and the excellent care is never ending. Dr. Elkus’s entire staff is always friendly and will go the extra mile to do what is needed.

I learned he is not well received or respected by the medical community.This is the reason he works in a practice without other doctors/fellows/medical students/nurse practitioners/PAs, no one wants to work with him.He is rude, condescending, and disrespectful making it difficult to communicate with him about his patients.Other doctors, surgeons, nurses, physical therapists, and pharmacists avoid Dr. Elkus's patients at all costs for his blatant disregard of others in the medical community.

A patient advocate. A fantastic surgeon. Fast recovery. Office staff gets an A+. Nothing but good things to say.

If it wasn't for Dr. Elkus, I would have had to have my big toe amputated. Imagine a life without flip flops. He's been amazing over the years for my accident-prone self.

Dr Elkus changed our lives ???????? He did a hip replacement on my husband. It's only been 2 weeks and he already is a changed man. All i can say is "Thank You Dr Elkus for giving us our livelyhood back" ????????????

Dr. Elkus is rude and arrogant. He thinks all others are beneath him and is condescending to other colleagues and patients. Arrogant attitudes are not what St Vincent’s is supposed to represent.

My mom fell and broke her femur at the hip socket. Dr. Elkus and his staff are excellent! Mom is 79 and had surgery on Thursday to rehab on Saturday and home the next Thursday! She is doing great! Dr. Elkus takes time with you, explains everything and is overall great!! Thank you and God bless you!

My experience with Dr. Elkus and his staff was very positive. Dr. Elkus spends time explaining what is going on with your health, test results etc. I felt very informed about my condition.

Really can't say enough about Dr Elkus and his entire staff! Dr Elkus gives you a total feel of security that he is absolutely going to take the very best care of you and never disappoints. When you encounter his peers and nurses they all speak with respect of him and his skills. His staff goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome and are the most efficient I have ever encountered. Would absolutely recommend him!!!

Dr. Elkus is very professional, knowledgeable & effective! I really appreciate his approach to gathering information & recording it to make the best possible decision & share that info, when appropriate, with support organizations like Physical Therapy. His office is also well organized and run, and support staff is very friendly! Family atmosphere with effective execution. Most businesses aren't run as well, so it was really nice to experience the most smoothly run office I have ever seen.

I had both knees replaced, 2 years apart. I did great, better than expected. If you do everything that rehab ask, even when it hurts, you will do well. Each day it will hurt less. I have full range of motion back. He is a wonderful doctor who genuinely cares for his patients.

I found Dr. Elkus's staff to be caring and efficient. Dr. Elkus was very concerned and spent lots of time with me doing an examination. I found him to be very knowledgeable and extremely caring and compassionate. I recommend him highly and will go back for my orthopedic needs.
