Dr. Matthew F Halsey

Dr. Halsey came into the room with a medical student and he was interactive and nice. He examined my daughter's foot, reviewed our x-ray, and explained the findings in the x-ray report. I am always pleased when a doctor takes the time to explain things to a patient. Even if it doesn't matter to the doctor whether or not a patient knows some piece of information, this kind of care and interaction is effective in a different way…it helps the patient know something more about their injury/problem…which helps them feel respected and helps them know they are in good hands. Before we left, I felt that we needed more clarity about whether my daughter should continue on crutches or not...as she didn't have a break. I admitted to not knowing much about the foot but that I didn't know how much pain we should tolerate. He said that he doesn't want my daughter to be in pain and that she can slowly transition to using her foot as it feels comfortable/not painful. He said that she can continue to use crutches out and about and only try walking a bit at home and slowly increase the use of the foot when out and about based on whether or not it hurts to use it at home. After hearing several lay people try to act like my daughter's discomfort was no big deal (brushing off a child's needs is so wrong), I was grateful and relieved for a doctor that would respond in this way. :) Dr. Halsey came into the room with a medical student and he was interactive and nice. Positive outcomes are what we all look for when searching for a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. My daughter had a double break in her growth plate thanks to a trampoline incident. It took a lot of research to find a surgeon who had (recent) experience in this sort of break. Today my daughter had her 18-month follow up and we were given the “all clear”. The X-rays look good and she’s recovered well. I can’t say enough good things about Deornbecher, everyone we met was friendly and the overall harrowing experience went as well as it possibly could go. Dr. Halsey was professional, friendly, and most importantly he is extremely skilled in his profession. Dr. Halsey's absence of bedside manner left a parent in tears, and a 7 year old wondering why the doctor considers him a liar. As part of a three year journey, we went for answers, and were met with skepticism, and told that out 7 year old is lying about the pain he has been in for 3 years. He did not attempt any kind of exam, and did not open the MRI results to review. This doctor has no business working with children. His ego complex will only create fear and doubt in the minds of those that need to trust him the most. Whatever brilliance he may offer in the field of medicine, it's counterbalanced entirely by his heartless approach when dealing with young children. Probably the rudest Dr I've ever met. I literally took my child and walked out of the appointment. He treated my child horribly, didn't even examine him and blew us off completely. Apparently, he didn't think our pediatrician should have referred us to him and didn't want to waste his time. I understand not everyone has great bedside manner and understand if he didn't find anything he could help us with, but hatefulness towards a 7 yr old with chronic pain is unacceptable. For what it's worth, I've never left a negative review for any Dr before- he was just unbelievably rude and I don't want other parents to have the experience we did. Dr. Halsey is a wonderful doctor. We’ve been with him since our five year old was first born, and plan to stay with him for years to come. Any parent that has had a child that has had to undergo surgeries is very scary, and Dr. Halsey made my husband and myself feel confident in his expertise, and put many of our fears to rest. He has always been non judgmental, and made us feel more than comfortable. I couldn’t ask for a better doctor for us to put our child’s wellbeing in. Thank you Dr Halsey

Although Dr. Halsey became an MD in 1994 he does not make an impression of a knowledgeable and experienced doctor. He apparently also believes that his position allows him being rude and repulsive.

Dr. Halsey was pleasant, kind, and established rapport well with my sensitive teen who has seen plenty of physicians, thus, is not easily impressed with doctors these days. Dr. Halsey seemed caring, genuine (resident was ok). We agree with the plan. This was *not* an urgent appointment, so scheduled over a month prior to the visit. We were given a buzzer at check-in to notify us of when staff would bring us back for the exam. This allowed us to walk a bit and grab a coffee as we were early.
