Dr. Nathan James Powell

Dr. NathanPowell is great and his trauma team including Dr. Diane Van Zandt are very knowledgable and professional. He is a great communicator, compassionate and gives you a great understanding of the surgery. After surgery he immediately checks with family with status. Exploratory surgery can create anxiety with the family. He gave us comfort and through his ability gave us the best of all possible results. I would absolutely recommend him and his team. He also has great credentials and certainly lived up to all expectations and exceeded those with my wife's surgery. A+ in all aspects from beginning to completion.

Dr. Powell is extremely knowledgeable and I personally credit him with saving my life after an ischemic bowel caused severe sepsis. He performed an emergency colectomy which did result in a few months with an ostomy (as is normal with these types of issues) but he was able to reverse it without further complications.

Dr. Nathan Powell almost killed me in Aug of 2019. He destroyed my bile duct resulting in an emergency laparotomy Roux En Y procedure. I now have suffered liver damage, intestinal damage (both small and large intestine), and damage to the deodum area in which they attached a bile duct they created using my intestine. I now have chronic medical issues sequela that will require lifelong monitoring and treatment. I believe this could have been completely avoided had they first tried diagnosis and treatment of my issues but instead opted first option to be surgical removal of my gallbladder. It was a misdiagnosis - I was actually having an episode caused from GI motility disorder. Removal of my gallbladder is not typically a treatment for this type of issue, unless they try everything else first. I woke up in the trauma unit after almost dying. Doctor Powell himself basically did no follow up - it all occured with his team which all would say things like "Well, unfortunately that's a good question for Powell, but I can't answer that directly". A year later I am still having the same issues I was hospitalized for. After going to Mayo Clinic in Arizona it was declared that I was misdiagnosed last year. I believe this complication would have never happened had Doctor Nathan Powell simply slowed down to research me as an individual patient and my surgical / medical history. I should have known in the hospital - the st francis staff went from a bi-lateral procedure being talked about to scheduling a laparoscopic procedure. I pulled my consent that morning because I felt something was off, and had his intern doctor come to my room to talk me into giving my consent again to have the procedure. While I understand Nathan Powell may be a good guy and an OK doctor, this type of thing should not slip through the cracks to almost cost someone their life and result in a condition in which they will need ongoing medical treatment. From my understanding most career surgeons go an entire career without making this kind of erroneous life threatening complication.

I was extremely anxious and he did a wonderful job to reassure me and had no complications from my gallbladder removal.

Complications caused from misdiagnosis of anatomy during surgery almost killed me. He had a mental breakdown at Saint Francis in my room apologizing admitting his negligence, crying. He's never returned contact and saint francis has not allowed me to see or speak to him after the surgery botch job.
