I saw Dr. Marx and his team for a ruptured ACL and torn MCL from ski injury. Dr. Marx has unbelievable expertise in this area of ACL tears during skiing (which is a special case I found out from him) and is the only doctor that recommended NOT to have surgery and recommended I allow the ACL to heal on its own (I consulted several prominent ACL surgeons in New York) . That was 11 months ago and I have been skiing again this season with no issues. Dr. Marx's expertise in this area saved me from unnecessary ACL reconstruction surgery and a 9 month recovery. In addition, the whole process of the office visit from appointment to visit through follow-up was the best I've ever experienced in any doctor or hospital -- everything is run very smoothly and they are very attentive to you. Dr. Marx is an amazingly kind, compassionate, knowledgeable and skilled surgeon. His staff is responsive, helpful, and attentive. I had seen several other surgeons for my knee injury before seeing Dr. Marx. From my first phone call to make an evaluation appointment, through surgery, recovery, and follow ups, I am so grateful I trusted Dr. Marx to repair my complicated knee injury. I tore my ACL and MCL in a bad skiing accident. Dr. Marx came highly recommended as the "knee guy," and I have to say, he's incredible. I tend to be athletic, and I've run 3 marathons in 2 years so I was very worried I wouldn't be back to myself. Surgery went well, everything was explained very thoroughly, what to expect, what recovery looks like. After 5 months, I was back to jogging/running. Eight months post surgery, I skied again, on some easy greens with a brace. He didn't recommend this but I was determined. My next goal is to run a half marathon before year's end. I was run over by a pick up truck on my bicycle commute to work, 2 months before my wedding. To say I was distressed is an understatement. I was immediately reassured by front desk manager, Sara. She got me in to see Dr Marx within the week. I appreciate her continued support with handling my case. Dr Marx explained I had a multi ligament knee injury. He listened to my circumstance and laid out my options. I opted to undergo surgery at HSS a mere 6 weeks before my wedding. 4 weeks post ACL repair and PLC replacement. Every aspect of surgery exceeded expectations. Working through PT now at HSS, and follow up appointments with Dr Marks, which are also well coordinated, even with the social distancing challenges.

Dr Marx and team are among the best in NYC. He has performed the procedure of a torn meniscus, painlessly I may add, and I felt safe and sound. He surrounds himself with likeminded people and i can honestly say, unlike other Dr visits I am completely at ease knowing i am in his hands.

After my young daughter tore her ACL, we visited with Dr. Marx on a recommendation. It was comforting to have Dr. Marx explain both the injury and the surgery in great detail. He was compassionate in dealing with the anxiety from my daughter. The surgery and recovery went almost exactly as explained. Unfortunately, my daughter then tore her other ACL. I had a left knee arthroscopy and partial lateral meniscectomy which Dr. Marx performed in November of 2020 - just one day before Thanksgiving. Man am I ever so thankful that it was he who performed it. I was 2 years into following a fitness and health journey, when the last 6 months - 1 year up until my procedure, my left knee began affecting me so much, it was having an impact on my quality of life, as I was limping from the pain and had to drastically lower the intensity of my workouts. Dr Robert Marx performed a shoulder/rotator cuff decompression surgery on me in July 2020. He is the most competent and knowledgeable doctor I have ever met in the field of Orthopedic surgery. My surgery went extremely smooth— everything was explained to me down to excruciating details and I am extremely pleased with the results of my surgery. Doctor Robert Marx has restored my mobility to me once in 2012 (right)and then again in 2019. (Left) Two dates coincide with my two knee replacements. I am an active 73 year male now who has been athletic all my life with a good diet. My first knee replacement has over 30 K miles of road cycling on it as well as a number of challenging climbs some almost 15K ft. Cycling is excellent for knee recovery and maintenance for sure . My second replacement ( let leg) was only done in 2019 This one has only 7K and some 10 mile flat power walking on it up until my high speed downhill cycle crash last February. Both knees were fine as I intentionally put the bike down having lost the ability to brake meaningfully or steer directionally after unavoidably doing battle with a sunken manhole cover. I’m back at HSS again ( best orthopedic hospital in the world) this time to plate my clavicle back together after a vain attempt to have it heal on its own. I’m sure I’ll be back on my bike and on my mountains again due to the magnificent work preformed at this hospital. I do test both the skill of my doctors and the excellent equipment they use a bit more than the average human being . If you want the best ,Doctor Robert Marx is the best at knee restoration after you have used up or broken your original parts God gave to you. Dr. Marx and his team are the best! Dr. Marx did a meniscetomy on me at the end of October and from my first consultation through surgery and recovery everything was amazing. Dr. Marx and his team were always available to thoroughly answer all of my questions and concerns throughout the entire process. And for an avid runner learning that she needed surgery, I had many questions and concerns! Everything went wonderfully and I have been able to return to running pain-free! My son had a shoulder dislocation injury during a hockey game. On top of that, his rotator cuff was cut off and it required somewhat serious surgery. Dr. Marx not only explained to us the severity of the injury and the procedure of the surgery. On the day of operation, he spent time with us and put our son at ease. The operation went smoothly and his follow up visits reported expected healing. Now my son is back to his ice hockey and the last visit we had with Dr. Marx, his shoulder showed as good as new. Dr. Marx is dismissive and more concerned about time than communication. He refused to consider a pre-existing heart condition, noted by my cardiologist. He would not listen when I complained of persistent pain post ACL reconstruction. He dictated notes indicating that I had no complaint of pain, right after I had expressed concerns of increasing pain and swelling. Ignored the MRI that I independently requested to seek answers, saying MRIs are not a dependable source of intel. Turns out one the screws he placed came loose, and the ACL graft became frayed. There were also confounding factors that he did not address. Found a new surgeon closer to home, and had a revision surgery 11 months after my initial reconstruction, to correct Marx’s surgery. The level of care at this Syracuse, NY facility was so far above and beyond that of HSS, it has been a world of difference. I wish I had never encountered Marx. Thankfully, the recovery from my more recent procedure is going much more smoothly, and with much better support from the new surgeon and staff. I would recommend working with a surgeon who will sit down and have a conversation with you. You do not want someone moving as brusquely as Marx does during office visits, during your procedure, nor a doctor who will not take your concerns seriously. There were obviously multiple issues with the outcome of my procedure which he disclaimed. I realize failures happen, but his lack of interest in the outcome was what was most questionable, and I can’t help wonder if it was this rushed and robotic approach might have caused error. Donna Svennevik - ACL reconstruction surgery and Meniscus repair. It was a balmy August Sunday night in the Rockaways. A three day sojourn in one of those cute bungalows lay before me. I picked up an electric rental bike and peddled thru the streets empty of the weekend crowds. Whee…. ! I remember feeling - Life is good. I reached my destination the supermarket, about to park the bike, standing - my two feet astride the bike, about to lift a leg over and the bike lunges and rears up like a spooked horse. It’s true what they say about the slow-motion quality of an accident. I was sure that I could control the bike but it was super heavy the way rental bikes tend to be. The bike twisted and torqued my left leg eventually slamming me to the ground, bike on top of me. Passerby’s quickly came to my aid lifting the bike off and suggesting I get up. My whole body was reeling like a fully lit pin ball machine, I didn’t want to get up yet. When I accepted a hand to stand, my left leg collapsed below me. Interesting I thought, I just need to shake this out and it will be ok. Cutting to the chase, there was no standing at all on the leg. I was practically carried into a good samaritan’s car and driven back to Manhattan. The next morning my knee swollen like a basketball, and using a beach-umbrella-pole as a crutch, I hobbled over to Dr. Della Valle, a wonderful doctor at HSS who treated me before for minor knee issues. After X-rays, an MRI and the aspiration of a great deal of blood, the diagnosis was a complete tear of the ACL and considerable damage to the Meniscus. Dr. Della Valle enthusiastically referred me to his colleague Dr. Robert Marx who he assured me, was the right doctor for my condition and would take great care of me. No sentence has been truer than that one. Dr Marx, Joe his PA and a team of residents came into the room. As I’m writing this, thinking back to that moment, my eyes tear up. Because the moment I met Dr Marx I knew I was going to be ok and he was going to help me and solve the very big problem I had. Dr Marx asked me about my activity level, I am an actress and a photographer. Recently for a short film I dove into the ground in a controlled fall and I climbed over a fence and did some running in high heels. As a journalistic photographer I’m always standing, crouching, running and climbing. He said we should wait a couple of weeks before surgery, to see how the knee would heal, I was surprised and relieved at his restraint and prudence. More than anything after meeting Dr Marx, I was confident for the first time in a couple of days that I would be able to move the way I wanted to. I returned to Dr Marx after the prescribed time and after examining me he suggested ACL reconstruction (using my own hamstring tissue) and Meniscus repair surgery. Ok, we set a date - on to the next obstacle, my not so great health insurance. I meet Maria Dedvukaj - Dr Marx’ practice manager, she is warm and present. I express my fears about my health insurance and she is optimistic that we can find a path thru. I might add here that when you find yourself at HSS it’s because you’re down and wounded and with that comes a great amount of fear. Knowing Dr Marx will perform the surgery and Maria will walk the path with me is intensely comforting. My fears are allayed. In the days prior to surgery Sarah Bunnell (from the practice) is helping with all kinds of pre-op details and she like Dr Marx and Maria all hit home the same message, that everything is going to be all right - in fact everything is going to be great and you will be whole again. Well a miracle happened, Maria found a way, HSS worked with my economics and Dr Marx extended to me an astounding generosity. I was joyful on surgery day in full trust of Dr Marx and knowing when I woke up I would be on the road to wholeness. It’s been three months since surgery and even though this is long recovery, every day I see improvement. My knee is fixed! Dr. Marx re-attached my patella tendon after a bad accident. He took me from being in a wheelchair to nearly full recovery with the help of HSS PT - HSS saved my life. He will listen to your feedback and incorporate it into your surgery, treatment, and recovery strategy. He is the doctor to trust with your recovery.

I recently had surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery. I took a fall and I severed my ACL and my LCL in my right knee with severe nerve damage, also drop foot. Dr. Robert Marx was my surgeon as well as Dr.Steve K. Lee. Dr. Marx is an excellent doctor. My care pre-surgery and post surgery the BEST!!! Dr Marx made me aware of all complications and precautions with my surgery. He monitored everything, setting me up with all the physicians due to my complicated case that I needed to see to ensure my surgery would be successful. Dr. Marx and his entire staff especially his office staff just took great care of me. It was a long process, but he and his staff every step from day one always there. There are so many great things I can say about Dr Marx and his practice. I have been a patient at HSS for several years and have seen several doctors. Dr Marx performed Arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus on my knee. He and his staff were wonderful as was the hospital and staff. My most recent experience with Dr Marx was his efforts to relieve my arthritis pain in the same knee. What I appreciated most was his persistence in trying to find pain relief without jumping into knee replacement. We have just finished a series of shots meant to lubricate the joint and it seems to be working. Dr Marx is an extremely competent surgeon and he patiently explains everything clearly. I wouldn't see anyone else. In addition, his staff is amazing. They are helpful, caring and patient. His PA Joe Meyer administered two of the three shots with great care and concern. I highly recommend Dr. Marx. His office staff literally held my hand, answered all questions and made the process as easy as it could be. Dr. Marx has been my go-to surgeon since I was diagnosed with shoulder impingement. We progressed with conservative treatment to eventual surgery. He is patient and kind and only offers surgery when necessary. I've referred many friends to him and some had surgery and others did not. Dr. Marx does what's right for each person keeping their lifestyle and goals in mind.

Dr. Marx is a excellent surgeon who is dedicated to his patients' recovery. He reconstructed my patella tendon and helped me progress from a wheelchair to walking well. He listened to my input throughout the process and continually worked to improve my recovery and well being. Dr. Marx's wealth of knowledge and experience lets him make the best decisions regarding your health.

Dr. Marx performed my right knee replacement on May 4th. After the third day I never needed the walker or cane. Amazing surgeon and staff. Every aspect of the procedure, from pre-op to aftercare was handled expertly with complete understanding, Including his billing department. A terrific surgeon.

I have never been to a WORSE doctor in my ENTIRE LIFE!!! I went to Dr. Marx for a consultation about my reoccurring scar tissue that was causing pain and many other problems after my ACL reconstruction surgery. I knew the problem was a build up of scar tissue because it has happened in the past and I had MRI reports and multiple other surgeons who confirmed this diagnosis. Though, when I went to this "amazing" surgeon he did not even care what I had to say or what any of the MRIs had to say even though the problem was black and white. He was constantly rude to my family and I and would even cut us off and said we were wrong. He even went on to say I had never torn my MCL even though I tore it at the same time as my ACL and had it repaired. He flat out called me a liar and that was the final straw. He did not want to listen to me as a patient and came up with a diagnosis that had nothing to do with my original complaint for my consultation. No one should ever see this man in their life he is a terrible doctor and a terrible person. I would rather die than see this arrogant, audacious, and awful man ever again IN MY LIFE. I ran 5-15 miles daily for most of 30 years. I made the mistake of having an ACL surgery at a top 10 teaching hospital; waas given a staph infaction. Was going to have to have that leg removed at hip possiby and certainly above knee; could not imagne not being able to run; but I was already septic and unknown infactius disease. Dr Marx was contaced and agreed to do my surgery. He had me directed from my drs at MSKCC to immeduately go to him at HSS. I had knee replacement surgery with Dr. Marx. It was a great experience from beginning to end. I can now walk without any pain at all and I am back playing golf. His staff was very attentive and caring. I am very grateful and recommend my friends and family to him and Hospital for Special Surgery.

Dr. Marx performed my meniscus surgery at the Hospital for Special Surgery last winter. He was fantastic. I couldn't have been any happier with my surgery, follow up care and rehabilitation program. I needed emergency surgery to repair my fully ruptured hamstring muscles and I heard that it's not such a common surgery and was worried, thank G-D i heard about Doctor Marx, the man is amazing, I have never met someone so professional, totally secure with what he was doing and very clear about all the details so I felt informed worn no surprises, I hope I never need a surgeon again but if I ever did, he would absolutely be my first choice. Dr. Marx is an amazing surgeon. He replaced my knee and changed my life by allowing me to walk and get back to golf. I am so grateful to him and his caring staff!

After my knee surgery, I was able to resume my regular activities fairly quickly. I got back to tennis and running after three months and six months later I am back and better than ever! Thank you Dr. Marx for your expertise and encouragement throughout.

I have never been to a WORSE doctor in my ENTIRE LIFE!!! I went to Dr. Marx for a consultation about my reoccurring scar tissue that was causing pain and many other problems after my ACL reconstruction surgery. I knew the problem was a build up of scar tissue because it has happened in the past and I had MRI reports and multiple other surgeons who confirmed this diagnosis. Though, when I went to this "amazing" surgeon he did not even care what I had to say and called me a liar and was very rude

Dr. Marx performed ACL reconstructive surgery on my 16 year old son. Dr. Marx and his team did a fantastic job reassuring us our son would be fine. Aside from Dr. Marx giving world class surgical experience, his team at HSS is 2nd to none!

Dr. Marx repaired the ACL for both of my daughters. Both daughters had a full-recovery and continued participating in high school sports and one went on to be a D1 athlete in college. Dr. Marx is knowledgeable, but he is also a caring doctor who takes the time to explain procedures and treatments to his patients and their families. His office staff is also pleasant and empathetic. I would not go to any other doctor if I needed orthopedic surgery. Dr. Marx repaired the ACL for both of my daughters. I am married to Maritza Luciano, the patient who submitted the above review and I can attest to her experience. I too am a patient of Dr Marx. I will not write a poor review against him, but whoever manages his schedule is a careless and insensitive individual. I was away int he caribbean when I injured my knee. I returned 3/15/16. After explaining my dilemma including excruciating pain on a scale of 9-10 , I was offered an appointment for 4/8/16. When exiting the plane, I immediately went to an emergency room with my "locked knee." X-rays were done, medication administered,appointment made immediately with an Orthopedic surgeon for that afternoon and MRI that evening. I am scheduled for surgery tomorrow. Physical therapy to be done by affiliated HHS PT. The service from the New Jersey medical services was prompt and outstanding. Why would I ever go back to to NY? I like that Dr Marx doesn't jump into surgery. I eventually needed shoulder surgery, but not without giving PT a chance to work. HSS is a great hospital and Dr. Marx is an amazing practitioner and surgeon.
