Stephen Fealy

I allowed Fealy to perform a hemi-arthroplasty on my right shoulder several years ago. It has been a disaster. Why? He incorrectly installed the stem. Today I have severe bone loss and have to undergo a reverse total should replacement in 10 days. Shortly post his surgery, my rotator cuff was torn requiring another surgery (not with Fealy). The competent surgeon advised me the stem was incorrectly placed. The rotator cuff was repaired but the effects of the botched hemi surgery followed me. In 10 days I have to live through the experience of a revision because of Fealy’s incompetence. A NYC based PT has told me Fealy no longer performs shoulder work. I cannot confirm that but it’s what I have been told. I advise potential patients to consider other options. There are many in NYC. He should not be one of them.

Implored me to have a hemi-arthroplasty on my right shoulder. I followed his advice. Little did I know he didn't know what he was doing. Post surgery, I had a torn rotator cuff requiring an additional surgery. At the time the new surgeon informed me Dr Fealy incorrectly placed the stem. Today, I have severe bone loss of the glenoid and require a revision - a reverse total shoulder arthroplasty. I am also informed by a NY based PT that Fealy no longer performs shoulder surgery. I haven't confirmed that view but it is what I am told. I warn all to re-consider other surgeons in NYC. The options are expansive. Do not include Fealy in your decision making process. Allowing him to be your surgeon will be a regretful choice. PS - I have read there is a long list of complaints against Fealy (I do not be place Dr in front of his name because he should not be a Dr.). Stay away from this guy.

Surgery was a very scary experience for me. Especially because I had to go alone. Just the idea of it and the possibilities of things going wrong drove me crazy. But, I needed it. So, I searched for and found the best doctor I could find. That Doctor, was Dr Stephen Fealy. I traveled all the way from the state of Texas to New York to have him operate on me because after reading his bio and seeing his picture my gut told me he’d be great. I was right. He was very good at communicating and precise with his work. Surgery went well and you could barely tell where the area operated on afterward. He was very understanding and I felt that he really heard me when I spoke to him. My only con is the office staff (Dianne) and Madalyn the PA. Madalyn does not listen at all and she lacks empathy when communicating with the patient. Ms Dianne is unhelpful and makes no attempt to provide you with costs or estimates of the surgery. Or accommodations if you need testing before the surgery for COVID or something else. She always seems like it’s a convenience when you ask her for assistance or information. The hospitals billing and prices are straightforward once you get them and you don’t have to worry about bills coming months later out of nowhere. In conclusion, the doctor is phenomenal and outweighs all the negative. You won’t regret choosing him.

I had a great experience with Dr. Fealy. As a dental surgeon I was concerned about how long I would be out of work. 2 other surgeons told me to not even think about going back for 6 weeks. Dr. Fealy told me I could be doing exams at 2 weeks and procedures at 4 weeks and he was right. On top of that I had no pain what so ever after my rotator cuff repair. I was expecting the worst based on listening to other people who had that procedure. Take it from someone who does surgery all day, it really does matter who does your procedure. Absolute game changer..completely dislocated my shoulder when I was 17 playing football, had initial surgery when I was 30, and had to have my shoulder completely replaced at age 65..amazingly I’m at the gym daily, lifting weights, playing golf, swimming, and most importantly SLEEPING with no worries that my shoulder will separate..I’m now 70 and most folks say I look great..more importantly I feel great, which is a testament to the care I received at HSS, and the complete trust I have in Dr Fealey, who besides being a genius, is a genuinely good man..if you need orthopedic surgery don’t even think of going anywhere else.. Saw doctor for a shoulder problem - nice guy in the appointment. Told me not to do anything about it - just strengthen the shoulder. E-mailed with the PA who tells me I have a different condition than the doctor told me during the appointment. PA says I should have another appointment if I want it clarified. I decided to call to see if the doctor thinks it's worth 2-3 hours of my time to have the discussion. I haven't gotten a call back after calling 3 times. had an absolutely lovely experience with Dr Fealy, Vinny and his staff. had very successful knee surgery and whole process was well managed. now back on the tennis court and pain free.

I had previously right shoulder operated in Mineola hospital by local surgeon who was referred to me by my GP a few years ago. He butchered my shoulder although he did arthroscopic, it took 18 months to heal and pain to be gone. This time around for my left shoulder, I went to see Dr. Fealy in HSS by referral back in 5/31/18. It has been 4 weeks since he operated. The day after surgery I waited for pain to come back once anesthesia wears off. But no pain, very minor dull pain left. I have no pain now other than tiny discomfort when it is humid outside 4 weeks after the surgery. He is amazing!! His bedside manner is great, very smart, explains shortly, concisely and precisely. BEST EVER!!!! doesn't describe Dr. Fealy's expertise or personality. Top surgeon with the greatest bedside manner. Caring, and thorough. Performed surgeries on my shoulder and knee. Gave me back my life after taking the pain and discomfort away. Office staff, and Physician assistant, Vinny, outstanding. Will recommend in a heartbeat, with lots of love!!! This is an unprofessional and dishonest man who does poor work. I should have known something was wrong when I waited 90 minutes past the appointment time to see him, he was incredibly cocky when we did meet boasting all sorts of credentials, spent less than 10 minutes with me and rushed me to do surgery. He literally, on the operating table, as the anesthesiologist was getting ready to put me under, asked me what type of graft we should do on my surgery. Then, another surgeon was brought into the room to assist him, because as Fealy explained, he ‘usually operates on older people who don’t pick the graft I did’ i.e. The guy has no clue what he’s doing. Unbelievable, but absolutely a true story. Big surprise, the surgery went wrong and I am way worse off after the surgery than I was before. Dr.was a blessing.. instead of cutting away bone in husbands knee , he placed a covering over the bone to protect it.... minimal damage to repairing the knee..where as other doctors here in Staten island wanted to remove parts screw in others!! Avoid at all costs, meeting Dr. Fealy is one of the worst things that has ever happened to me in my life. He actually advised me that going home alone after an ACL reconstruction surgery - to a third floor walk up - was "perfectly ok". He rushed me to get the surgery I needed done before my insurance changed on New Years, and assured me he would keep seeing me after he insurance changed. He botched the surgery, and at age 23 I went from veteran, athlete and active man to a person who could not even sit or walk without feeling like I am being stabbed in my knee, let alone run. Dr. Fealy performed a total knee replacement on my right knee and total shoulder replacements on both my shoulders, all within an 11 month period from December of 2011 to October of 2012. I became a functioning person again because of him and I'm eternally grateful. It's 4 years later and he's still following up with me yearly, and I'm walking and moving my shoulders with ease. Thank you Dr. Fealy!
