Dr. Hughes and his team performed surgery on my spine for my intractable sciatica pain. He was very gentle (great "bedside manner"), clear and thorough in describing what my operation would entail. The actual surgery was carried out at Fairfax Hospital and the entire team was so professional and competent. Dr. Hughes told me that my pain would be gone immediately after the operation, and he was correct- literally no more pain. I was able to return to my regular activities very soon afterwards. If anyone suffers from sciatica that does not respond to Physical Therapy or other similar therapies, I strongly recommend that you contact Dr. Hughes at OrthoVirginia to see if he can help you. Probably a great surgeon, but not very customer focused. Very little eye contact, very little compassion, and very little explanations. Does not offer much information or discussion and does not answer many questions. Instead shows a picture of what a completed surgery should looks like and provides a little sheet with a website for the patient to get the information. Must be a good doctor, there are lots of patients coming to see him. He saw me 1 hour after my appointment.

Very personable. Took time to answer my questions and reassure me that my healing was on track. Made sure I knew how to follow up if I had further concerns or questions. I would definitely recommend him.

Dr. Hughes was referred to me by my primary care physician. I made an appointment with him. I waited to be called into an exam room about 30 minutes since they were very busy that day. The person who first talked with me was very thorough in his questions and had a professional and empathetic manner. He took some X-rays of my back and hips. I had some MRIs and X-rays from two and a half years ago that I was told had been sent from the imaging department where they were done, but they had only sent reports, not images. So I had to wait while they called and ask for those to be sent. Meanwhile Dr. Hughes had come in briefly to talk to me. He left to go see another patient while they waited to receive the other images. Dr. Hughes returned to my room and showed me the X-rays that they had just done in the office. He told me exactly what procedure he could perform to ease the pressure on my sciatic nerve and to make me pain free. He reassured me that this would be a short surgery and that I would immediately have no more back and leg pain. Recovery time would be a matter of days. He gave me orders to get a new MRI and other imaging done and assured that I could have this surgery done in the next month or so. This is the first real hope I have had after getting steroid shots, going to physical therapy, exercising daily, getting acupuncture treatments, and seeing a chiropractor. As usual the staff was exceptional. Dr Hughes was very thorough and as usual gives me a feeling of knowledge and care.

I went to Dr Hughes due to a herniated disk on level L4/L5 causing very painful sciatica on my right leg that had not gone away for about 8 months I tried it all physical therapy, steroid injections, medication and I went with a chiropractor with no relief. I decided to do research because I could no longer live with the amount of pain I was in it was taking a toll on me emotionally and I ended up finding Dr Hughes who recommended doing a microdisectomy I went ahead and scheduled surgery with him May 9th and I am now two weeks post op from the surgery I no longer have pain in my leg and the weakness I had has started to go away. The caliber Dr. Hughes has is unmatched as both a surgeon and as a human being. To begin my story will take us back two years. On my 24th birthday, i woke up with severe neck pain. I usually have neck pain in the morning so I thought nothing of it. However, over the next two weeks, this pain began radiating down my left arm and eventually i lost feeling in my thumb and forefinger. I went to two surgeons (2 neurosurgeons) before Dr, Hughes and neither gave me an explanation on why I had this pain night and day. My quality of life declined rapidly and I would cry at night and take opioids during the day to get by during work. Dr. Hughes was both conservative in that he wanted to see if my body would heal itself first and aggressive in that he wanted to make sure I would not have permanent nerve damage by waiting too long to have surgery. Turns out, i had two herniations between c5-c7 and needed a two level ACDF. Dr. Hughes treated me like his own daughter and I truly believe he saved my life. I was first referred to Dr. Hughes in early March with neck and spine issues (2 herniated discs) that I started feeling in January. He could tell I wasn't ready mentally for surgery but he mentioned it as the best option. Eventually after other treatments didn't work, I was ready for it. I had a discectomy and fusion last week. He is so professional, compassionate, knowledgeable yet very humble. He listens to your concerns rather than brushing you off. He’s also very very honest. Dr. Hughes is definitely the best orthopedic surgeon I’ve ever met.

I have never had back issues before so I did not know what to expect with my ortho visits. Dr. Hughes was great with diagnosing and prescribing solutions.

Dr Hughes is an excellent doctor !! Thorough and knowledgeable. Most definitely would recommend.

Although I have not seen many orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Hughes struck me as a very professional and knowledgeable surgeon. He quickly diagnosed my symptoms and gave very informative and helpful feedback on what needed to be done. I understand that the wait times could be extended, but I think you have to take into account the number of patients he sees and the attention he gives to each patient. Dr. Hughes was very thorough with the tests he ordered and predicted correctly what the issue was. On a second visit, following tests, he confirmed the diagnosis and gave me a shot that was painless and also relieved my symptoms. Spent a good Amount of time with me, very friendly and concerned.

My experience with Dr. Hughes was very positive once I got to see him. I made an appointment but waited in the lobby for an hour after checking in. Once I was taken to the examination room, I waited another 30 mins. I don’t understand the point of making appointments. Of course, by the time Dr Hughes came in the exam room, I was frustrated, impatient and annoyed. They seriously need to review their processes. Just had my two year post surgery exam and I couldn't be happier with the result. My back surgery was a life changer and Dr. Hughes and his team at OrthoVirginia are first class professionals that I can highly recommend to anybody with back issues.

I have been a patient of Dr. Hughes twice. I'm still dealing with the second issue, but about 10 years ago he performed my back surgery. He is an excellent and thorough doctor. My radiology reports indicate that the work he previously performed is in excellent condition, which is why I came back to him for the new problem. Dr Hughes is an expert in this field I have been living with pain in my lower back and neck for past few years finally my wife convinced me to get an opinion about how to treat in it. I also have been in the healthcare business for the past 20 years so I did my research and Dr Hughes came highly recommended, when I met him I quickly realized that he knows what he is doing and he’s an expert in it, I have read some reviews about Dr Hughes that people claim he needs to improve his bedside manner but trust me when you need a sensitive operation done on your spine you really don’t need bedside manners we need someone who knows what they’re doing and is an expert in his field. After an MRI showed serious stenosis and disc issues from C4-7 my neurologist recommended seeing a surgeon immediately. I was unable to get an appt with many, but Dr Hughes had an available appt. He was very nice and extremely informative from day 1. His x-rays confirmed the diagnosis and I was informed surgery was the best option. Surgery was scheduled asap and occurred in under a month. I was informed of everything that was happening and why all additional tests were needed. Dr Hughes and his PA Leeman were very supportive the day of surgery and ever since as was everyone else at OrthoVirginia. I sent an email on a weekend through the portal with a concern and was answered within 45 minutes. I am still currently in care (3 months past surgery) but all my symptoms have resolved. Dr. Steven Hughes is everything a superb surgeon should be. He speaks plainly and clearly so the patient can clearly understand. He explains things extremely well. My surgery was flawless and happened (surgery time, two nights in hospital, 2-3 week recovery, etc.) exactly as Dr. Hughes said it would. And, he is a surgeon who wants to explore all non-surgical approaches first. Love it! In summary, he is a genuine “rock star”!! I couldn’t recommend him more highly!!

Strongly recommend OrthoVirginia team of Dr Stephen Hughes and PA Jennifer Leeman for back surgery. I am active 75yo man with no history of back issues. Day before Thanksgiving 2020 I ruptured L3-4 disc and could barely walk with constant pain and unable to stand erect. Dr. Hughes discussed and explained my MRI and xrays with my wife and myself. He accurately stated what relief he believed a discectomy/laminectomy would provide. He did not push surgery but left the decision to me. Tried PT and a cortisone shot in the disc but quickly decided surgery was way to go for me. Took the first surgery slot available 4 weeks from my injury and am ecstatic with results. Removal of disc material and some bony structure from arthritis. Immediately able to walk with no pain. Background: I received a cortisone shot 2x and it seemed like after every shot wore off I had worse symptoms than before. I knew I needed a long term solution because I was only fixing it with a bandaid and not actually attacking the problem Dr. Hughes performed a microdiscectomy on my L5 due to a ruptured disk that was bothering me for about 2+ years. Dr Hughes is a 10 STAR ???? Dr. In 2005 he did a 8 hour back surgery. He said there was nothing good in my back. I had fallen down 6-7 steps. The end result was AMAZING. It did take 3-4 months to be out of my pain. But I was pain free for the next 13-14 years. Which you don't hear too many that can say this. I had hip surgery for tears and I was not walking correctly in 2018. Then I started having excruciating pain about an inch or two above my waist. I told him it had to be Nerve Pain as it was relentless. He hesitated doing another surgery as I am now 70 yrs old. He decided to get a Vascular Surgeon to assist him. So he opened me from my left side, then Dr Hughes did his Magic!! He cleaned out levels L1 and L2. Then put spaces in. This was in February 2020 and once home, my pain was COMPLETELY GONE. Very much enjoyed my time with Dr Hughes. He’s very much to the point and does not beat around the bush. I appreciated his straightforwardness and thoughtfulness to finally getting me a diagnosis. I was happily surprised when we came to a diagnosis that he immediately said “don’t do surgery”.

Exceptional surgeon. Outstanding experience. Dr. Hughes has operated on me twice. As a retired career fighter pilot who ejected I have serious spine issues and experience with back surgeries. Dr. Hughes, and his PA, are right to the point, providing specific guidance, detailed instructions and accurate prognosis with dates attached. You do not receive 'hand holding and promises' - you DO receive absolute professionalism, excellent health care, and a dedicated medical team focused on the patient and their rapid return to life. Dr. Hughes performed lumbar surgery to fix severe back pain. He and his staff are great.

Dr. Hughes is a knowledgeable and skilled surgeon. I read some negative reviews on him but I did not have that experience. He was always pleasant and personable to me. His PA, Jennifer Leeman is also professional and personable and made the entire experience bearable.

After several years of chronic back pain, I started up with Dr. Hughes as a second set of doctors after moving to the area. I follow all instructions such as getting additional MRI’s, blood work, etc. After telling me that I was “not a surgical case,” Dr. Hughes effectively left me in the dust without any treatment options. If you do not suspect to be a “surgical case,” find a different doctor.
