Dr. Brian Christopher Toolan

During my 3 visits over the course of 18 months Dr. Toolan kept diagnosing my problem as tendonitis and brushing off my pain and swelling as age related. Turns out I had a huge bone spur shredding the tendon as I walked..... not sure how he missed that 3 times! Ultimately I went to podiatrist who reviewed the same MRI Dr Toolan looked at, he diagnosed the problem within seconds. Problems were surgically corrected and I'm now on the mend.

He spent almost no time with me and did a terrible job explaining what had happened to me and what the treatment would be. It felt like I was an inconvenience to him. When I brought what I thought may be a serious issue to his attention during my first visit, he brushed it off as a non-issue and told me that it wasn’t an issue. It sure felt like an issue at the time and I’m not a doctor. He didn’t even give me any advice on reaching out to him if the issue continued. A few weeks later I found out that the serious issue required me to go to the ER and put me in the intensive care unit for a few days. The serious issue had gotten worse and threatened my life. The doctors at the ER told me that I could have died from the issue if it went on much longer and that my life was still at risk. I wasn’t out of the woods just yet. I also learned that what I was experiencing during that first doctor visit was an extremely common sign of the condition I had.

It was recommended by my 2nd opinion to consult with a 3rd opinion on a possible surgical fix to the original surgery I had on my foot. I chose Dr. Toolan after several reviews of each foot doc at Elmhurst (and this took lots of time). Dr Toolan consulted with my 2nd opinion Dr and read my medical records prior to my visit but still wanted to hear, in my own words, the timeline from original surgery to what led me to him. He took notes, listened, examined my foot, read the x-rays his staff took and began to give me his accessmemt of my situation. He gave me two outcomes if he corrected the issues and when I asked he gave me his HONEST opinion. Even though, I didn't like the answer, we both agreed not to proceed with additional surgery. I give 4 stars because he is straight to the point, not a warm personality and you can't talk to the office only the hospital appt desk. Went to 3 doctors before seeing Dr. Toolan for my ankle. He knew exactly what was wrong and treated me and got me back in shape. He knows his stuff.

Get a 2nd opinion. I felt that he didn’t listen to what I was telling him and I tried explaining over and over. He took an X-ray and it showed what I told him it would. He then asked if I want to do his shifts on Tuesdays and Thursdays because I know it all! I know how my body works, I know what the problem is. He didn’t want to hear it. He was also 20 min behind schedule and front desk staff were rude to the several people who came in after me. Disappointing, I was hoping for so much better.

He told me I had to figure it out on my own. No help what’s so ever.I would hive him no stars. He said you damaged your peroneal tendon. That’s all. No tests .

I had a thorough body assessment from a female resident from his team. But Dr Tolon was not impressive. He barely spent any time with my hudband and I. He acted as if it was an inconvenience to even see me. It wasn't his words it was his actions. We drove 6 hours for not an answer but atleast a preventative device to return me to living. I was very disappointed when we left his office.

I didn't like the answers Dr. Toolan gave me but he was spot on. He recommended against surgery and gave me a course of treatment that worked.

He is,the finest foot and ankle surgeon ever.....skilled, kind, thorough...everything anyone would want in a dictor, in a surgeon....THE BEST

Dr. Toolan has been an excellent surgeon. I think my surgery went really well and I'm very happy with the overall outcome. His has a really awesome nurse, Jackie, who is very responsive and super nice. I have had not had any issues getting questions answered or feeling like I wasn't getting enough face time with the doctor.
