About Dr. Gregory Scott Smith
Reviews for Dr. Gregory Scott Smith
They are not clear with their costs they appointed me an EGD and said 1400 but then the bill was over 7000 that is not the way it should be that is not having consideration for their patients or a drop of respect totally disappointed
Dr. Smith is fantastic if and when you get to see him. While the office staff is fairly nice, they are the most unorganized doctor's office I have ever seen. You are forced to leave a message and no one returns it. You request a prescription refill and it doesn't get called in. The last straw was in August when my daughter had a follow-up with Dr. Smith before she left for college. We received a letter advising us the appointment had been cancelled and they would call us shortly to reschedule it. They never called us so we have switched to another doctor. Iâm posting this so maybe it wonât happen to you! My first visit (and last) to Athens Gastroenterology in July, 2021 was with Margaret Brown PA. I was referred to this office by my Rheumatologist. I arrived for my appointment and was taken to an exam room by Kayla, Ms. Brownâs nurse or medical assistant (not sure of her title). Ms. Brown came in, never making eye contact. She advised me that she did not receive my records from my Rheumatologist. I advised her she could get my recent lab work from Lab Corp. Kayla came into exam room with a paper and Ms. Brown advised her that was not the lab work she needed so Kayla left the room. She returned with several pages of lab work and Ms. Brown began reading it. She asked me a lot of GI questions. She stated she was concerned about âmyâ lab work because it reflected a lot of abnormal results. I spent almost one and half hours (1 ½) hours) with Ms. Brown reviewing this lab work while she created her diagnosis and what tests she would order based on the lab work. She advised me that I was bleeding internally, from somewhere, but she did not know where and wouldnât until I had an upper and lower endoscopy, which she ordered. She put me on a prescription for a health issue she felt needed immediate treatment. I was upset, experiencing a lot of anxiety, and angry, angry because if my lab work was so bad and it reflected so many negative results, why didnât the physician who ordered it call me immediately? She added to my anxiety with all her concerns about what the lab work reflected was going on inside my body. Not once during this appointment did Ms. Brown make eye contact with me. She was solely focused on the lab work and her laptop she was entering all this information into. At the end of our appointment I asked her for a copy of the lab work because I intended on contacting the physician and ask them why they had not called me, when they had the lab work for a month by this appointment, and catch the issues and report them to me. I left her office so upset, scared and so full of anxiety about what could possibly be going on inside my GI tract and how I could be bleeding internally. I walked around for almost two hours trying to calm myself. When I got home I kept thinking about that lab work. Later in the evening I finally pulled myself together enough to look at it. I was reviewing it and looking up every test that had an abnormal result. It was pages of lab work. At the end I happened to notice the lab work was by a Cancer Center. Why would my physician order lab work from a cancer center? Oh no, do I have cancer and he didnât want to tell me yet? Then I looked at the person who ordered the lab work and did not, and have not ever seen that provider. Then I noticed the date of birthâ¦..it was for a 69 year old (Iâm 61) and then I finally saw the nameâ¦..it was a male (Iâm a female)! This lab work was for a 69 year old male cancer patient. Now think about it, how bad do you think his lab work was? How bad do you think the diagnosis Ms. Brown was making based on this lab work? HOW SCARED DO YOU THINK I WAS? How many HIPPA violations occurred here? The next morning I called and spoke to Kayla. I asked her to look at the lab work, as she got to the name, she started laughing and said, âOh, I see it, this isnât even your lab work!â I was even more upset by her attitude and advised her I wanted every bit of this visit removed from my record. So, what happened? WELL, neither Kayla, who picked up the lab work from the fax machine and brought it to Ms. Brown, nor Ms. Brown who received the paperwork BOTHERED TO CHECK THE NAME AND BIRTHDATE to confirm it was MY lab work. I spent 1 ½ hours being diagnosed from a 69 year old male cancer patients lab work. I really want whoever is taking the time to read this to not only think about how I felt during that 1 ½ hours but what could have possibly happened to me when they were performing the endoscopy and colonoscopy on me, BASED on the blood

Very personable person. Not very knowledgeable. Doesn’t return calls at all.
Dr Smith is a great doctor is taking good care of me during my liver disease. Margaret Brown's pretty good and Miss Mary Dotson is the best in the world you'll ever meet for a PA
If it werenât for Mary Dotson, I would find another Dr. and I actually have not even met Dr Smith. My 1st visit was highlighted by 2 hours of waiting. Ms. Dotson was very apologetic. My 2nd visit was for a CT Scan of my liver.....only they didnât have me on their schedule so I went home. The 3rd visit was to discuss the findings of the CT Scan which was not done, not rescheduled, and no one bothered to communicate any of this. So I was, once again, there for nothing. A new date was set for CT Scan, more blood work had to be done. âMiss Bobbieâ is responsible for drawing blood but I donât think she has done it very much. I have 2 great veins and it took sticking both arms to get the blood. Also, when she checks you in, ( BP, heart rate, temperature, etc, itâs quite clear she would rather be somewhere else.....totally void of a welcoming personality. She failed to reimburse my credit card for the 2nd visit, and she did not cancel the CT Scan which was made at a facility that doesnât accept my insurance. They called wanting to know where I was! I had an appointment with another facility that accepts my insurance, but no one had canceled the 1st appointment. Again, Miss Mary Dotson is extremely nice and very apologetic, I think she has had a lot of experience trying to make things right. Overall, this is an extremely disorganized, poorly run office.
He runs hours and hours behind. You can't get ahold of anyone to find out biopsy or endoscopy findings. Horrible bed side manner. His only saving grace is the two Nps he has working there and I think one does not even work there any more. Place is not clean, lobby is gross. Avoid this place at all cost.
Called many time to schedule an appointment. More often than not, the answering machine responses during normal business hours. Front staff doesn’t emulate the treatment that I’ve consistently received by Dr Smith. Considering a change very soon. Too difficult to reach any PERSON in the phone.

Horrible experience being their patient, I ended up in the e.r since noone was returning phone calls for a whole week when I called with issues. completely incompetent on their part , very upsetting.
Dr Greg Smith ruptured my bile duct while removing gallstones. I ended up in ICU for two weeks had three emergency surgeries in two days in a 2 1/2 month hospital stay. I never saw Dr. Smith again after he ruptured my bile duct. He ruin me financially because I did not have any health insurance. Dr Greg Smith ruptured my bile duct while removing gallstones. Dr. Smith and his staff are very nice, he's a great Dr. GI and Liver. He really cares about his patients, I wish I never left Athens Ga. I don't get the medical care I need here in Illinois!!
Dr. Smith and his office staff are very nice and professional. Dr. Smith has a good bedside manner. I like the decore of his waiting room. It has a fireplace, and I feel like I am at home. Dr. Smith's nurse practioner, Mary Dotson, is also nice and very professional.
I think Dr. Smith and staff are so nice and professional.
I was laughed at when I mentioned a painful and rare disorder I suffer from and told not to believe everything I read on the internet. Then I was told that I needed a colonoscopy to rule out colon cancer ($1600) while he ignored the fact that my previous GI told me that I had SIBO. Then after my procedure I had to call 3 times over 6 weeks before I could get my biopsy result and was just told to eat more fiber. I went to him in the first place because every time I ate fibrous foods I end up doubled over in pain. I wouldn't recommend this doctor to anyone. Very disappointed recently. Refrained from 'complaining' because my disappointment had been with "business policy" and not physician care. That changed today. My husband was seen twice in four days in the ER for complications in his GI tract. The ER instructed us to follow up with the GI doctor immediately for care(they even gave us another GI physician referral that we refused because we thought my husband had a GI doctor in Dr. Smith) . We called this morning and was told the earliest anyone in Dr. Smith's office could see him was 10 days away. We have been driving 45 minutes to see Dr. Smith and Mary Dotson because of the care we received. We have been using this office for close to 20 years. Maybe it it is time to take that referral. Dr. Smith provided excellent care for my husband when my he was admitted to the hospital twice through the emergency room. He appears very competent and has good bedside manner. The low rating reflects his practice versus him personally. There are no complaints about his competency and ability to provide excellent care when you can get to him. There are also no complaints about the office if you are face to face with personnel. However, there does appear to be a lack of systems and processes in place in his office for follow up. No one calls to review results of tests such as biopsies, xrays, etc. or answer questions. When you call to try to get the results and leave messages no one calls you back. I have lost confidence in their ability to provide the quality care I was seeking for my husband because of the lack of follow through and follow up. I had to go to the hospital and personally get X-ray results which showed his condition was worse- yet no one has called and it has now been a month- so off we go again to the emergency room. We love our gastro in Conyers too, but we drove from Conyers to Athens to get better care through a hospital. (St. Mary’s is outstanding). It’s time to switch back to our original Gastroenterologist to get the follow through my husband deserves to try to resolve his issues. Dr. Smithis a wonderful and honest doctor. I feel he truly cares about his patients and he takes time with you. The staff is always very nice. The only reason i didnt give 5 stars was if you need to see him in an emergency there are no slots for emergency appointments so you have to wait or go to the ER. The 5 stars are directed towards the PA named Margaret and the nurse, Sophia. We didn’t meet Dr. Smith, so I can’t give my opinion on him. I can tell you that Margaret is the most detailed PA I have ever met. She met with us for over an hour discussing my son’s symptoms and coming up with a plan. And Sophia is so awesome too! She is so helpful and compassionate. The only negative thing I can tell you is this: My son was unable to swallow any liquids without incredible pain. Margaret ordered a test to be done in the office that required him to drink something. He was having a lot of trouble, so we asked Sophia to find Margaret and see if it could be mixed in a smaller amount of water. While we were waiting on Sophia to come back, another nurse named Amber comes barging in our room. She doesn’t introduce herself. All she says is “You will still have to pay for that test even if you don’t take it.” Nothing else. That was all she said. Needless to say, we told her that was not our problem, we were just asking if it could be mixed in a smaller amount. She left and didn’t say anything else. So right now I would like to insert a rating of negative 5 stars for Amber only. She has no business being a nurse/medical assistant, unless she wants to go work at the local prison. Sophia more than adequately made up for Amber’s stupidity. I have a feeling Sophia probably goes behind Amber a lot, fixing Amber’s slack and ridiculousness. Dr. Smith is a horrible Dr!
Great treatment
Dr. Smith is good all around. I have also seen his nurse practitioner, Mary Dotson. My experience with both providers and staff have been very satisfactory. I have no complaints at this time. Keep up the good work!
Dr. Gregory Smith is one of the few doctors I know who is passionate about what he does and isn't in it for the money. Dr. Smith is very personable with a great sense of humor. He truly cares about my health. Excellent customer service from the staff and quality Healthcare.
Dr. Gregory Smith has been my GI physician since 2002. Dr. Smith is one of the few doctors I know who is passionate about what he does and isn’t in it for the money. Dr. Smith is very personable with a great sense of humor. Sometimes he has to get on to me because he truly cares about my health and I can be a little stubborn about following doctor’s advice-- which is why I have to keep coming back. His nurse practitioner, Mary Dotson, is also wonderful and easy to talk to. They have tag-teamed to get to the “bottom” of my digestive problems and have helped me find ways to manage my care/treatment. I would probably be at least 99% better if not for my own stubbornness in eating things I know I’m not supposed to eat. For the most part, I have been met with friendly staff from the moment I walk through the door to the time I check out. I REALLY appreciate the EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE and HEALTH CARE I receive at Athens Gastro Center. I highly recommend them. Dr. Gregory Smith has been my GI physician since 2002. He is extremely knowledgeable very friendly and cares about finding out what's wrong with his clients and the best way to handle it in a holistic manner including prescriptions but also including exercise, diet and supplements.
Visited Dr. Smith for a procedure yesterday and saw him in his office a few days before. He is a kind. and it was clear that he was knowledgeable in his field. The staff emulates his attitude!!! I felt I was well cared for which added a lot of trust.

Dr Smith responded to emergency room call on behalf of my 95 year old father who has GERD and got a piece of food stuck in his esophagus. Dr Smith was called after emergency room was unsuccessful for 4+ hours. We were very scared by the situation! Dr Smith calmed everyone, resolved the problem, gave my parents a pep talk, and sent my father home with easy-to-execute instructions and a folllowup appt.

You can forget about hearing results!! It took 3 times, all on separate days, to get results of simple blood work. I paid over $1100 for an endoscopy, to be handed a piece of paper with findings. They only told me about one of 2 findings in my procedure... I had to google to find out what it meant. They missed ordered blood work on the day of my procedure, so I had to return to their office that afternoon. It has been a month, and I have yet to hear the results. I will be finding a new dr!!!!!!!

He did not look at my medical past or the recommendations and treatment that had been given to me by his own NP on his staff. He just assumed I was an overweight woman who did not eat right nor exercise. He did not listen to me as to the reasons I had to stop exercising was due to two broken legs and was just now walking on my own. He did not acknowledge that I had already gone from 360 lbs to 191 lbs. that I was eating small high fiber high protein meals until his NP told me to stop.

Beware. Equipment breakdown, 4 hours laying on table just waiting, TERRIBLE. Charged me full out-of-pocket fees without reimbursement discount. TERRIBLE. My driver lost a full day of work for a scheduled 1.5 appt. Didn't care about me as patient but sure loves the money. Inconvenience him by being late for an appt. or missing and see what he charges you.....all about the money. TERRIBLE
