First of all, to be transparent, I want to disclose that I was not the actual patient in this physicians care. I went to this physician with a family member for the initial diagnosis results post an ER visit that led to an immediate referral to oncology. Clinically she is sharp and her sense of urgency was apparent in her plan of action. However, I found her demeanor borderline condescending and pessimistic at best. She REALLY wanted to emphasize that there was not much that could be done and just was persistent in wanting to drive that point home. We told her repeatedly we did not want statistics. We knew it wasn’t good and we didn’t want every shred of hope ripped away. However, she continued to bring up the grim prognosis in subsequent visits. It was almost like she was trying to cover herself against a lawsuit for not disclosing statistics of a possible prognosis. I wanted to tell her that we would sign a liability waiver if she would refrain from telling us it was hopeless.
