About Dr. Kenneth B Mathis
Reviews for Dr. Kenneth B Mathis
Top notch! He has done total replacements on both my hips, the surgery is easy to schedule, I spent one night in hospital each time because I live a couple of hours from the hospital but he tells me that many patients go home the same day. Rehab is easy, I ditched my walker on the third day and as I type this, six weeks post surgery, I am walking normally and without pain. Dr. Mathis is very friendly and easy to talk to, and the office and hospital staff were exceptional. The food’s good, too! I can’t recommend him highly enough!
Doctor Mathis inherited me from another doctor to help put me back together. I experienced a major motorcycle wreck in 2015 resulting in a major knee replacement. Doctor Mathis has restored my life in replacing both of my knees and reducing my pain level of 7-8 daily, to 0 today. I am walking strong again. Doctor Mathis is a dedicated doctor and I would highly recommend him to anyone. He is very attentive and his goal is to fix you an restore your life. He will always be my go to doctor should I ever require further surgery. His operating team at Memorial Herman where he does his surgery is outstanding. My Spouse had Hip Replacement Surgery this morning at Memorial Herman Orthopedic & Spine Hospital. (05/23/2022) We had to be there at 5am, surgery was at 7am so she was first up. Dr. Mathis called me about 8am to advise that everything went well. I was very impressed with everything from check-in staff, nursing staff, physical therapist, Doctor's Assistant and Doctor Mathis all were outstanding. She decided on Doctor Ken Mathis based on his online reviews and personal recommendations from previous patients. Dr. Mathis certainly appeared to be the type of Doctor that goes the extra mile to ensure the safety and recovery of his patients. We thought Dr. Mathis and his surgery crew were outstanding. Spouse completed the exercises after surgery from 3 difference Physical Therapists. PT Petti, sorry probably misspelled her last name, was Outstanding spending a lot of time going through the PT exercises over and over and making sure Spouse was fully understanding them. She was very professional. Nurse Kristine in the pre-operation area did an Outstanding job of getting Spouse ready for surgery. So over all Outstanding experience. Thank you is not enough to express my gratitude. The care I received from Dr Megan Williams, Melanie R. and Edward B. made my surgery experience amazing Thank all of You .
My dad had knee replacement surgery for arthritis done by Dr. Mathis a year ago, and is very happy with the results. The surgery itself was flawless, and Dr. Mathis did a great job of explaining the risks and other treatments. Truly a world-class doctor. Could not be more pleased with the process and results from my partial knee replacement performed by Dr. Mathis in Dec 2021. It's been six weeks since surgery and I'm walking 2 to 3 miles with a normal gait and without pain as compared with before surgery when I was limping and in pain every step. Have been riding the stationary bike during recovery and am now ready to move back to my street bike. Have also started hitting golf balls again and intend to get back on the course in a couple more weeks. The entire staff in Dr. Mathis' office has been very friendly and helpful throughout. The wait times are minimal in spite of the fact that the doctor took the time before surgery to fully discuss the operation and patiently answer all my questions. Suggest post-surgery physical therapy with Qui Le at Memorial Hermann Rehabilitation (Greenway) as I believe his expertise has also assisted my quick recovery. Had knee replacement surgery. Dr Mathis prepared me well. Provided a series of exercises to strengthen upper leg muscles which made a huge difference in the speed of my recovery. His staff were extremely helpful - the utmost professionals. A year after surgery I was able to enjoy our annual family ski trip.

In November of 2021 I had my second Birmingham hip replacement by Dr Kenneth Mathis (which performed both sides)and really outside of what he explained would happen I really had no idea what to expect from an athletes standpoint. The thought of not being able to train anymore to me was supremely devastating. I trusted Dr Mathis and his confidence in this type of procedure and I’m here to report that one year later I’ve stepped on stage and took 1st place in one category and 3rd in another. I was told by several people that I would never rebuild my legs and would never be able to squat or leg press the kind of weight I was use to. On this day I am squatting and leg pressing more than I ever have and my legs have fully recovered from the surgery and have takin off on a growth pattern Dr Mathis is simply second to none in my opinion and it’s clear that God has put that man in the right spot. Dr Mathis and his entire team are fabulous. I am 53 years old and had the BHR done by Dr. Mathis. I have always lived a very active lifestyle, but before the surgery pain kept me from doing everything I love to do. Now, it is one year post surgery and I am pain free and completely happy with the results. Thank you Dr. Mathis!
Dr. Mathis is excellent! A very good communicator, clear, concise and a good spirit. As they say "A very good bedside manner". My hip replacement procedure went extremely well. The Memorial Hermann staff were both professional and warm. The overall experience was great. If I had to do it all over again I would run (well, at least in spirit!) to the hospital to do it all over again. The pre-op instructions by Dr. Mathis' staff and Memorial Hermann staff was very good. I followed them and they contributed to the good result, and no pain. YMMV. In my case there was no pain really. Discomfort, yes but nowhere near the level of pain. It's surgery! Can't be all sunshine and lolipops! But post-op recovery was way better than I expected. After surgery, walk as much as you can tolerate, build up and at all comes back. At 45 days post-op I am WAY BETTER than the day before surgery. WAY BETTER! I am a HAPPY CAMPER! Dr. Mathis is the best. Office staff is top-notch. Everything about him and his staff deserves five stars!
My mom is 79 years old and have had two total knee replacement surgeries done before she was referred to Dr. Mathis for the THIRD knee replacement. Because my mom had a prior accident on this particular leg (fracture of femur which had fused at a different angle), previous two surgeries were not as successful and the leg was never aligned for her to walk properly. We were also very concerned because my mom was a cancer survivor and very weak. Dr. Mathis took an X-ray and showed us that surgery was necessary otherwise my mom would end up fracturing her leg because of loose joint. He also explained to us how he would go about replacing the knee and aligning the leg. He also assured us that even though the surgery would take long and is difficult, it will be successful. We felt very comfortable with his explanations and went ahead with mom’s surgery on a date scheduled by his office. Dr. Mathis actually completed the surgery in lesser time than anticipated and my mom went home within two days after the surgery. On her sixth week after the surgery, Dr. Mathis revealed something that pleasantly surprised us. He told us that before my mom’s surgery, he had thought (AT HIS HOME - ON HIS PERSONAL TIME) about various methods as to operating my mom which would result into aligning her leg properly and with least amount of recovery time and had figured out the right way of doing the surgery, This week is the seventh week of my mom’s surgery. My mom started walking WITHOUT A WALKER OR A CANE just after one month of surgery. She goes to the park and walks about a mile a day and keeps improving day by day. We cannot thank Dr. Mathis enough for taking his personal time to solve the challenge my mother’s condition posed. DR. A great doctor and a wonderful nursing staff
Dr. Mathis did a total hip replacement for me. At 6 weeks now & no pain ever, I can walk again. Great bedside manner, kept me and my caregiver well informed throughout the process.
I am 67 years old and have had 3 back surgeries and a total knee replacement but i still had knee and back pain. I was referred to Dr. Mathis and within 5 minutes of seeing me, he was able to diagnose that my problem was my right hip. He took an x-ray, showed me the results and within 2 weeks, I was scheduled to have my right hip replaced which he told me may very well help my knee pain as there was no evidence of any problems there. He said on a scale of 1-10 my hip was a 9 as it related to problems. The surgery was done and now within 4 weeks I was doing much better. At 8 weeks out now, I can walk, bend and move about pain free in my hip, back and knee which I haven’t been able to do for years. Dr. Mathis truly gave me a new lease on life and Now I can truly enjoy my retirement. He is absolutely amazing. I highly recommend him and all his staff. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. I’m an AVN patient. While I’m not completely satisfied with my first hip replacement, I’m dealing with the same condition in my other hip. Dr Mathis was kind and his staff actually did x rays properly, which is more than I can say about many others. I’m not satisfied that consideration was given to my overall symptoms. Keeping me “on task” regarding my hip after obtaining my history seems like I’ve become a patient kicked down the road. After informing me my hip has now collapsed, looking at my other surgical report, suddenly, I fine and don’t need anything but pain management. Everything I have learned about a collapsed head of the femur has said it will cause more destruction to the bone and joint. I prefer a different material but regardless, I expect a doctor to inform me. I have a lot more to say about this but I can’t be the only person complaining as much about my back as my hip. I know that because I’ve had 8 years to research, and 23 years as a massage therapist. If you are not a complicated patient, there are great orthopedic doctors in Houston. If you expect to have them tell you about secondary inflammatory problems or check for possible excessive polyethylene wear when they don’t want to, they ALL have avoidance techniques. Good luck if you expect more than standard operating procedure. I’m an AVN patient. Dr . Mathis fixed both of my hips with a BHR , I couldn’t be more pleased with this Doctor and his staff , I did my own research and did not need him to baby me or hold my hand through the process. Dr. Matthis performed a partial knee replacement for me one month ago. His staff and the facility were excellent; everyone was caring, attentive and efficient. My recovery has gone better than I expected and I'm so happy that I made the decision to have the surgery and that I chose Dr. Matthis. I highly recommend him and his staff.

I had both knees replaced in 2019. My experience with Dr Mathis, his team and the orthopedic hospital were all very positive. The Orthopedic Clinic for UT and the hospital both offer free parking which is a rare find these days. I have returned to normal activity and I am pain free in less than a year. I interviewed multiple knee surgeons and believe he and UT hospital are best options.
I am appalled at the after care my 80 year old father received after his knee replacement. He and my mother were sent home, catheter still in, over the upcoming Christmas holiday. No home healthcare arranged to help them. I am thinking of reporting him to the medical board. Such a shame because he came so highly recommended.

I had knee placement it June 2017 I did all the physical therapy and exercises but continue having pain & difficulty getting daily activities done, finally managed to get appointment, without being examined or answering my questions he send me for therapy and wanted me to go for pain management to get dope which I do not want. 14 months months postop I’ve been for the final check up I was examined by a Resident but when he came in he did not answer my questions he put his hands up in front of my mouth so I wouldn’t talk and when my husband tried to say something to him about my condition he did the same rude manner and he did the same thing to the poor Resident and the only thing he told me was don’t exercise in the gym go back to physical therapy and left the room without even touching me. So, I saw this guy upon a recommendation from my sister-in-law who worked for BCM. Underwent a one and one-half minute examination. Mathis asked no questions re sports or recreational activities that would help explain the throbbing pain in my knees. And the shooting pains that let me know there was a problem. He did say that I should get a $375 MRI at my local hospital in Humble. And that he would contact me with the results and perhaps a recommendation on what to do next. Sure, he was professional in his demeanor as was his assistant. I firmly believe that 'bed-side manner' is not a part of his vocabulary. At any rate, I got the MRI done. Received word from the hospital that all relevant results were sent to Mathis' office. After a week I called Mathis' office. Of course he was busy with his one minute examinations. Did manage to talk to an assistant who verified receipt of my MRI results. He indicated that it was just a torn upper and lower part of my meniscus and referred me to a lady doctor who would give me cortisone and/or steroid shots that would alleviate the pain for six months. That I shouldn't require surgery for a year. What kind of practice doesn't follow up with patients? Hence, the one star rating. Find a more intelligent and empathetic Ortho surgeon if you need one. I am a physician. My mother-in-law lives in Houston and my wife took her to Dr. Mathis for second opinion. Dr Mathis never examined my mother-in-law.The next day a wound care specialist examined a bedsore at the upper end of her incision and pus drained out, she became septic, deathly ill and required emergency drainage of 2 L of pus from her infected prosthesis. I hope Dr. Mathis reads this review and takes to heart and “look under the hood” , examine your patients!!! Shame on you!!!!
This alleged doctor is a joke to his profession. After waiting 2 hrs to see him, taking unnecessary x-rays he took a few months ago, paying a co-pay, etc, he refused to provide an opinion about my right knee, because I had not used him to replace my right hip due to his posterior entry vs more modern anterior. He knew all this b4 I wasted all this time as his staff asked the reason for my appt. He was a complete pompous jerk about it but offered to repay my co-pay but not my time and expenses.

Dr Kenneth Mathis is a terrific orthopedic surgeon. When other orthopedic surgeons fail, Dr. Mathis and his team can absolutely resolve the problem. His staff is very professional and his choice of hospitals, Memorial Herman Orthopedic and Spine Hospital, is like a 5 star hotel. It caters to the patient in every way possible. After suffering with a botched hip replacement for 2 years, he had me walking (without a cain support) in 2 weeks. I highly recommend him!

I have never experienced a kinder, more passionate and compassionate doctor in all my 60 years. He is exceptional at his skill, but more than that, he is giving of his time when he is with you. He does not rush and will answer your questions before you ask as well as those you haven't thought of. There is no other doctor I would recommend so highly as I do Dr. Ken Mathis.
I find it hard to believe a real patient could write that Dr. Mathis is kind and caring. He is rude and arrogant and won't let a patient finish a sentence. He is running strictly a knee replacement factory and nothing else. If you go for an office visit with Dr.Mathis, you will see what I mean. I would not recommend this doctor to any one.
Dr Mathis replaced both my hips in 2000/2001. I am walking and not stuck in a wheelchair. He always gives me all the time I need and answers my questions. If you need orthopedic help in Houston, he is the guy to call. Ps my hips still are going stong, I just finished a week at scout camp.

Now, I'm having lots of trouble with my left hip joint and I'm going right back to the best surgeon for this in the area.
