Hi, All I would like to share my experience as a patient advocate for one of Dr, Cumagun's patients. This is not to talk badly about her but to inform her and others regarding the difficulties the elderly face. I feel like it's the right thing to do and could possibly make someone else's situation better. An extended family member, who I have known for 20 plus years, called me frantic and asked me for help because he was in excruciating pain. He couldn't lay, stand, or sit. He's a 79-year-old veteran. He had been stuck on the floor and/ or in a sitting position for days. I am a full-time student majoring in social work. I am also a full-time volunteer. and advocate for the elderly. I took him to American Family Care where they stated "they don't prescribe narcotics (he still doesn't understand that definition). They administered him a shot that relieved his pain for 1 day and they refused to x-ray him. He called me crying 2 days later, so I drove him to the E.R. where they told him he had arthritis. And that he needed to make an appointment with a doctor. Two days passed - he called me again and the pain was so bad he couldn't communicate. I told him to make an appt with the Dr. recommended by the E.R. He kept speaking highly of a Dr. he really liked that had treated him at the V.A., Dr. Maria. We scheduled him an appointment with her. She stated he had a pinched nerve and prescribed him hydrocodone (5 mg, 2x a day). These pills did nothing for the pain! It hurt me to see the pain he was going through. What if that were your grandfather or loved one? I brought my laptop, slept on his chair, and monitored him overnight. They told him they would help him by calling in something stronger to avoid the emergency room and give him a referral for further care. They lied to him and didn't follow through. We contacted his "referral" and they had not received any of his information. This is an elderly man who has never been written or taken a narcotic pain pill before (according to him). My point being... I took my sister to the Dr. who had bronchitis two months ago. She's young and attractive. They gave her 30 hydrocodones, 7.5 with refills. We need to take care of the elderly, even if they don't say the right things. I'm sure many of you can relate. It has been proven that Dr's take better care of attractive and younger patients. Let's advocate for the elderly! - It will be you someday
