Doctor Bowen did my shoulder surgery a while back and couldn't ask for a better surgeon. I had really no problems with it afterwards. Would never go to anyone else with that problem.

Dr Bowen is a phenomenal surgeon! He has the best bedside manner of any surgeon I’ve ever seen. He takes his time talking with you and answer any questions. He is extremely knowledgeable and very nice

Dr. Mark Bowen (Northwestern and Northshore, Chicago) performed Rotator Cuff Surgery (arthroscopic) on my left shoulder in mid April 2019. 4 months later (mid August) and after keeping to the 2 weekly physical therapy sessions for these 4 months, I felt I was over 90% recovered. I have been golfing and resuming almost full workout activities (carefully and not 100%, but close) since early Sept. Dr. Bowen also repaired my ACL tear 15 years ago which went and feels great. I can’t say enough on how excellent Dr. Bowen’s surgery for me was. Forget about emotional criticisms that “his bedside manner is curt or terse”; who cares? If you want great results from a top orthopedic surgeon I highly recommend Dr. Bowen. I was an overweight mom playing basketball with my middle school students. I tore my acl coming to a complete stop while pivoting on my right foot. Ouch! Fast forward...0Dr. Mark Bowen did a fantastic job on my knee. He was honest, didn't push meds on me, and his bedside manner was heartfelt. I waited about five years to leave this review because I wanted to wait and see if my knee would really heal without any pain, or restrictions. Well, I'm happy to say that I feel great. An added bonus was that the scar is barely noticeable. In fact, if I didn't tell you about it, you'd never notice it. Thank you, Dr. Bowen.

Dr. Bowen is egotistical and lacks the empathy required by a doctor. He spent a total of 7 minutes with me between two office visits and gave me little detail about MRI results. He didn't show me the MRI image until I asked. He offered no treatment or advice besides rest and physical therapy which I was already doing. Dr. Bowen is an excellent doctor and surgeon. He repaired both my left shoulder rotator cuff and 15 years later repaired my right shoulder rotator cuff. I also saw him for a knee problem but it did not result in surgery. Dr. Bowen has the best bedside manners, he explains my situation and was very concerned about my overall health and well being. Dr. Bowen is an amazing surgeon and doctor. He spent almost 30 minutes with me, being patient and answering every question I had, and believe me I had a lot. I tore my ACL and meniscus and he worked extra hard to make sure my surgery could happen as fast as possible. Easily the best in the business, highly recommenced any day. I went to Dr. Mark Bowen for a knee replacement in 1990. Then for another knee replacement five years later. When I went up rehabilitation several other people were recovering. Several had a problem of infections or worse. I never had even a small problem. This is nearly 15-20 years later. My knees work as well as they did when I was 16. At 83 years now I am grateful that he did my surgeries.

He laughed at me when I voiced my concern for a torn acl. Very bad experience. Maybe he was having a bad day.

Extremely competent surgeon. I had full faith and trust in his skills and ability and he did an amazing job for me. I would recommend him without hesitation.

Dr. Mark Bowen is an excellent doctor. He has a very kind and efficient staff. I am the third member of my family to have surgery by Dr. Bowen. I would highly recommend Dr. Bowen.

Dr. Bowen has fixed a torn meniscus in both of my knees. With my recent surgery I was off the pain meds the first day after surgery and back to full mobility with 10 PT sessions. I would highly recommend him to anyone. I never experienced problems in scheduling appointments or waiting a long time before an appt. Staff is very friendly and helpful.

I had the misfortune of being referred to Dr Bowen for a SLAP tear repair. He needs remedial instruction on interpersonal interactions. He was impatient, rude, and dismissive. Here are just a few examples of how he treated me during a single, 15-minute, visit: We were discussing a treatment plan, and he insisted I see a hematologist first because I had 2 DVTs 11 years ago. I asked him to clarify which tests he needed, since I had seen someone when I had those DVTs and had a whole slew of tests done already, and I'd even had surgery since then with no repeat problems. He accused me of trying to get him to cut corners so as to get me on the operating table sooner(!). I was aghast. I began crying because I was frustrated by his constant interruptions, because I was in pain, and because he stood up to leave without bothering to discuss a pain management plan with me (and this was the second visit during which I had told him about my pain). He responded, "I don't know why what I'm saying is upsetting you so much," as though my crying had somehow offended or threatened him. I said I was confused about my treatment plan, because despite having a SLAP tear, he was unwilling to put me on the surgery schedule. (He wants me to see a rheumatologist and hematologist first, which is fine, but I didn't understand why he wouldn't even discuss what would happen afterward.) Clearly irritated, he said, "I already explained it all to you. Do you need me sit back down and explain it all over again?" I told him, again, that I was in pain, and it wasn't until later that I realized he had been baiting me to ask for narcotics!: he repeatedly asked, "What is it that you're looking for for pain relief?" I said, "I don't know! You're the medical doctor!" I was so confused. I said, "I don't know, a corticosteroid shot in the joint? What?" And he said, "Well, you have a lot of inflammation," and paused. I said, "Okay...so what do you suggest?" and he said, "An anti-inflammatory." I said that sounded just fine, and he seemed taken aback. As it happens, I HATE narcotics. It didn't even OCCUR to me to ask for them. If he had taken 5 min to ask me about my surgical history, he would have found that out. There's more, but you get the idea. Stay far, far away from this man. I can't not express how dissatisfied I am with Dr. Bowen. He is extremely rude and unhelpful. I went to him twice and he gave me the same answer, despite my pain not changing. I had a change of insurance between my two appointments and his staff told me that my insurance was accepted. Then, a week later, I get a bill because he was out of next work. $120 for a 10-minute appointment where he was rude to me and made fun of me during the visit. I went to see Dr. Bowen today as a second opinion before I scheduled knee replacementioned surgery. I found him to be kind, caring and interested in what I had to say. He confirmed replacement was enviable but put my mind at ease that I would be doing the right thing.

Dr. Bowen did surgery on my right rotator cuff he did a wonderful job. Dr. Bowen treated me with respect and explained what the surgery involved and the recovery. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND DR. BOWEN!

Dr. Mark K. Bowen, MD is world class in performing miracles for knee surgery. Dr. Bowen replaced my left ACL using alograpgh in 2002, I am still feeling better than new while performing extreme sports!!! Dr. Bowen is a GOD send, and will be my first option for any orthopedic work within his practice. He is also a great personality!!!

I had a full rotator cuff tear with my bicep literally hanging on by threads. While it was a fairly obvious diagnosis once into the surgery he found more damage than the MRI had shown including a badly torn bicep which he completely fixed to perfection. Everything was thoroughly explained to me before, during, and after the surgery. He actually went the extra mile to take extra precautions to respect my tattoos. Everything healed up better than ever with no noticeable scarring incl my tattoos!

This was my second surgery with Dr. Bowen and my experience was equally wonderful. From initial consultation to final post op visit Dr. Bowen and his staff (Karla/team) always had my best well being in mind. Dr. Bowen always gives you an honest and straight forward assessment and you always feel you are in the hands of a great surgeon. I hope to be surgery free for a long time, but if I need to again Dr. Bowen is my first choice!! thank you Doctor!!

He is an incredible physician. I've torn both my ACLs and both my meniscus' and wouldn't go anywhere else. I made the mistake of going to another ortho closer to my house and it was night and day with regard to care and my personal satisfaction and attentiveness.

He is the best of the best. Diagnosed an ACL tear on me that was 20 years old without an MRI. Did my ACL reconstruction with hamstring graft. I don't believe in reviewing docs because any doc who has made it this far is hardworking and smart but Dr Bowen is above and beyond.

Fantastic doc

In 1998 I had a bad car accident. When I woke up in the hospital, the ortho there (not mark) told me that there has little to no hope-when I asked when I would run again, he told me that I would walk with a cane. I had full ruptures of my PCL, LCL and MCL and needed extensive reconstruction of my meniscus. I had a friend who is a cardiac surgeon and another that worked for the AAOS and they both told me that for a knee that there are only 2 surgeons in the world-Dr Mark Bowen(northwestern) and Dr Pietro Tonino(Loyola)-both in Chicago. Dr Tonino described a process that was a little more invasive, a little more tried. Dr Bowen described a process which was less invasive and a little more modern, so I decided on Dr Bowen. He first prescribed me with PT to get ready for the operation, and I went diligently (in order to allow a surgeon to do well you must be a good patient). Six weeks later, I went in. 30 days later, I was back in PT. I was what I would describe as fully recovered 8 weeks after surgery. Both doctors told me that my long term prognosis was not good-that I would be looking at a full joint replacement in about a decade due to the damage that the meniscus and joint surfaces sustained. It is now 2014 and I have gotten 8 more years out of the joint than I was told I would. I will be going to Dr Bowen for this again, and feel that he is about the most qualified ortho surgeon that you can find. In 1998 I had a bad car accident.
