I had a great experience with Dr. Carfrae! He was very caring, skilled when he operated on my ear. I can highly recommend him!!

Truthfully, I'm on the fence about this clinic. Let me 1st say, the staff all seemed helpful and friendly. I didn't have any trouble finding their office, either. I had to cancel my 2nd appointment because of snow and they were very understanding and very willing to reschedule me as soon as possible. Now, I was referred to this clinic by another ENT because he didn't want to misdiagnose me and wanted someone more qualified to examine me. Now, I never actually saw the doctor, himself, which I'm ok with but .... I saw Trisha both visits. The 1st visit went pretty well, she prescribed a couple meds and told me to start a low sodium diet, then set up another appointment to have a VNG test done. Which I already expected, because the last ENT told me they would perform this test to determine what was going on. I felt hopeful leaving that visit that I'd finally get answers. The 2nd and now I'm assuming my last visit, I did the VNG test and when I saw Trisha to get my results, she said I have vestibular migraines (I do agree) and then handed me a piece of paper and said, "here's what to avoid and watch for triggers, if you have any vertigo look back 24hrs and see what you ate ", she looked in my ears, reviewed a bit of what my vertigo feels like, then she handed me another piece of paper and told me to give that to the girls at the desk.. and that was it.. umm ok.. she suggested No follow up, which that may be because they don't treat vestibular migraines, ok that's fine, but she didn't suggest another doctor who can help me manage/treat this. She didn't even suggest I follow up with my regular doctor. I am unsure if I'm to keep taking the meds prescribed or stop them? Who will refill them if/when I need them refilled.. Yes, I could have asked that at my appointment but the appointment did seem a bit rushed and she seemed very matter of fact with me. Like, "that's all I can tell you".. Even with a managed diet, I still have vertigo, full ear feeling and some light headedness all the time. So, I don't know.. like I said, I'm on the fence. I could not be more pleased with the results of the Mastoidectomy Dr. Carfrae performed for me on February 25, 2022. He also did a grafting of the ear drum in order to close the perforation. I had not known what to expect in regard to recovery - it has gone very well. I am very grateful to Dr. Carfrae and his staff. After years of differentENTs Dr Carfrae offered a procedure not offered by others. So far all is well and I'm anxious for my followup in another month to see how much my hearing has improved. I also liked the PA and have no problem seeing her either.

Very professional and got to see doctor in timely manner.

Dr. Carfrae is an awesome caring doctor who is great with kids! One of our visits he gave my 3 year old a ride on his chair from the exam room to the checkout desk. My son really liked that! He also is a very good doctor and took great care of my son in surgery, I highly recommend him to anyone in need of an ear doctor!

Very positive experience over all. DR. Carfrae and his staff were very helpful and friendly.

Dr Carfrae was amazing at helping me assess my options with a lifelong ear problem. Trisha Hittenmiller, ARNP MSN does an outstanding job of cleaning my ear as needed so new problems don't occur. The staff are helpful and friendly.

I wish I could tell you about my experience with Dr Carfrae. However, thanks to his staff I didn't even get the chance to meet him. It was confusing trying to find his office. FYI, he is located in a building labeled Iowa Orthopedic and not Iowa Ear Center, information that the front desk staff should make new patients aware of, but they don't. That would mean they'd have to go the extra mile and make mention of it when they book your first appointment. Let me tell you with certainty, that's not in their character! When I brought it to their attention about no identifying features on the building relating it to the Iowa Ear Center, they had no response. My appointment was for 1:30 pm. I called their office at 1:33 pm to inform them I was having difficulties finding it. The receptionist guided me to their location and I walked in their doors at 1:38 pm. She told me that they were in a meeting discussing rescheduling my appointment. I realize I have some responsibility in being late to the appointment and I own that. I'm also not convinced that Dr Carfrae was ready at 1:30 sharp to see me, nor was he ready to see me at 1:38 when I was there since the staff told me he was running behind. And, since he was already running behind it leads me to believe that was due to either (a. His staff not allowing enough time scheduled for appointments, or (b. Other patients showing up late (no doubt later than 8 minutes) and not being turned away like I was. In either case, I fail to believe that Dr Carfrae was unable to meet with me even for a brief conversation (5-10 minutes long.) Yet, there was time for him to gather his staff together and have a meeting about my 8 minute late arrival. When the receptionist told me that, it made no sense to me. Having said that, this appointment meant the world to me. I have been battling Bell's Palsy for a year and was told he is the doctor that can help me. So, I made the appointment and called multiple times to confirm the date and time and make sure they received the referrals. I also printed off the patient forms online and filled them out ahead of time to save time. I work a midnight shift and got up in the middle of my sleep to make this appointment because it was that important. I made the staff aware of this. They offered little empathy. Perhaps, they were busy. I'm not for sure. What I observed was 3 staff members standing around 1 staff member on the phone looking at a reception area with no one but me in it. It really poses the question of whether his staff is incompetent or unfeeling. They know they are in a location that is difficult for new patients to find yet they offer no guidance to that when they book your appointment. They also should know that new patient appointments will take longer than appointments with existing patients, yet there is no latitude for a new patient being 5-8 minutes late due to lack of communication on Dr Carfrae's staff's part. At the end of the experience with only Dr Carfrae's staff, I think I was hoping just one of them would've cared and been somewhat supportive and maybe even apologetic. ...Maybe even open-minded enough to say, "This is what we will do for you." Some reassurance to know I was in good hands would've been nice. I think kindness is everything! I think if being kind poses that much of an effort, maybe they should try to think of their patients as family members and treat them that way. Maybe then they'd want to provide exceptional service. As far as trying to find ways to make it easier for patients to locate your office, that's a simple fix! Have a conversation with new patients about where you are located. It's really that simple! It doesn't take a lot of overthinking or trying to design a suitable map, or wasting time in meetings pondering what to do so that patients can find you! Simply have a conversation with your patients. It's really that easy! You can do it! I know you can! I wish I could tell you about my experience with Dr Carfrae. I to had a bad experience at his office. His assistant (dark haired) treated me twice and was the rudest person I have ever had at a doctors office. She told me the day I walked out (I could take her advice or leave it). Very very unprofessional. I had a minor operation with the doctor, it took less than 15 minutes at the hospital. They charged my insurance company $13,500 outrageous. I belive he's the worst doctor I have ever been too I to had a bad experience at his office. I am writing this review with a heavy heart. I heard so many good things and decided to go with Dr Carfrae for my ear surgery. First, he is too busy to be accessible. Second, in my case the surgery he did on my ear was a complete failure. It can be a mere misfortune too but the way I was treated after the whole trauma of losing my ear was more horrible. He seems to have no empathy or compassion for his patient. As soon as his business is done with us, he would say thank you, nothing else is possible. I had to approach more doctors to even discuss my further options. I have met a couple of more patients who have not been dealt well under his care and that makes me wonder the hype of his success stories. One of the best, Most down to earth doctors I have ever meet now after surgery I can hear again. He personally called to check my condition (not the staff or just some one from the office) and to talk about how it went and if I needed anything just let him know. He is a great doctor. This clinic is totally incompetent! The billing services try to double bill the insurance and the patient.
