Dr. Shapiro was rude and disrespectful. As he appeared too busy and / or occupied to spend more than 2 minutes with me as the patient - he gave no information and had to be asked repeatedly for an evaluation of my injury. Then he gave no adequate or actionable information as to how to treat the injury. It took a lot of time and effort to get the appointment through insurance and I was sent out empty handed. He just did his surgery and then he was done, barely cared about the follow ups, doesn’t care about his patients. I had my surgery during beginning of Covid and all physical therapy places was closed and I asked him for a recommendation on what workouts to do after surgery and post surgery care. And he told me to just google it!!! There’s different stages of post surgery and special cares after surgery, you don’t just google it. So now my knee has an extra bone sticking out. I am very disappointed with the way the nurses and receptionist staff are currently handling appointments over the phone, as well as in person consultations. They are treating people very poorly. The nurses/ receptionist are very disorganized so also very rude, they have no customer care at all and aren't bothered by their mistakes or to lose the business. They are quick to just refer you back to your primary doctor and tell you to ask for another Orthopedic Specialist just not to see you. My doctor's office said Dr. Shapiro is a great specialist but as good as he may be. His staff isn't and I wouldn't recommend his practice at this time. Oh God, If I could do 0 stars I would. I had a torn ACL. He did the 1st surgery, after that I could not move my leg it was stuck in one position so he did a 2nd surgery and could not fix that. IT WAS STUCK IN ONE POSITION FOR A YEAR!!! He was extremely rude and left my leg worse than it was to begin with. I saw a few other doctors and nobody would touch my leg because they said it was so bad. Finally I got a referral for THE CHEIF SURGEON AT USC. My 3rd surgery was a week ago and I am so pleased with the results. Not only is he the sweetest doctor ever, but he had to go and and fix what shapiro did. And he said shapiro butchered to my leg. If i had a negative 10 stars i will give it to this doctor and his staff. My father has been waiting for his appointment for months, he is in so much pain, but they didn't even ask. We live in LA, Spanish speakers are majority! And they don't help you, you have to bring your own translator. Its 2020 and pandemic times. All doctors do phone calls, video calls. But they just didn't want me to be on the phone helping my father. We got to the appointment and because he didn't bring the physical CD from the MRI only the written results, they didn't receive my father and cancel his appointment. The staff is the worst! No manners,no care. You are treating elder people with disabilities!! If you don't care, you should find another job! If i had a negative 10 stars i will give it to this doctor and his staff. Went in for a double full knee replacements in Sept. 2017 and Dr. Shapiro talked me out of it to do partial replacements. Here it is 2020 and BOTH partial replacements are FAILING and WORSE than even BEFORE replacements and in tons of pain!!! Got 3 other orthopedic surgeons opinions and they said I should have had FULL replacements like I wanted. Plus, knee spacings are off and other part of knees are now arthritic and I have to do full replacements or I won't even be able to walk soon!!! Feel like I got a hack job. Wouldn't recommend him or his office to anyone. Horrible experience!!! Went in for a double full knee replacements in Sept. 2017 and Dr. Shapiro talked me out of it to do partial replacements. Dr. Shapiro and his staff are very professional and he has more than 40 years of experience, I had femoral surgery abroad about 8 years ago and my surgery was unsuccessful. Dr. Shapiro operated on my right femur and repaired it in February 2019, and now, after 16 months, I have no problem. Thank you very much Dr. Shapiro.

The most unethical, rude and disrespectful Doctor I have ever encountered with? I have so much pain in my right knee for the past 4 months, my visit with him took 45 minutes but only 2 minutes with the Dr. and the answer was some long medical terminology and go see a physical therapist and Have a good day was the answer. I had had a severely broken ankle in 2 places, and ankle surgery with plates and screws in Europe. 2 weeks after my surgery I visited Dr Shapiro for a follow up. He took out my cast, did not put a new one or even a splint or boot and left me unprotected and in severe pain. Even though I told him that I need to be casted for 6 weeks and thats common practice too! I ended up going to the ER the next day in excruciating pain, where they placed a spint. Worst doctor ever! Dont go, he doesnt care about his patients.

In my personal opinion I cannot recommend Dr Schapiro. He took care of a relative who ended up dying. He performed two surgeries on my relative. My relative ended up dying. I never heard a word from his office or from him. Again, in my personal opinion I could never recommend Dr Schapiro.

Honestly their empathy levels are on the low end but i could care less about that and more about the end result. Dr Shapiro treated my broken arm. So stoked on Dr. Shapiro, he did surgery on my knee in October. I had my acl replaced as well as having my mcl and meniscus repaired. The entry scars where small and healed quick, very light bruising. It is now Feb and things are going great. Couldn't be happier with the surgery and outcome. I went to DR. Shapiro around October 2015. At the time I researched his name did not find any reviews trusted him with my Achilles Tendon surgery. Two surgeries later and almost two years I still have an open incision. He wanted to do a third surgery but I lost faith. Have spoken to several outpatient nurses who know of him. I've been told all prior DR. Shapiro post surgery patients they see have infections and have to find a new doctor. I have found a new doctor to hopefully correct it.

March 26, 2016 upgrade: I must add that a bad experience with a wrist surgeon made me realize Dr. Shapiro kept me fully informed. The latest surgeon told me nothing before surgery, and nothing after. Dr. Shapiro, on the other hand, told me what he planned the day before, and again the next morning. I trust him as a surgeon, but object to his fearful obsession with arbitration clauses. My January comments: Michael R Shapiro clearly lacks confidence in his medical skills; self-doubt that passes for standard healthcare in this great country: most doctors placing finances above helping people in pain. I came in with a broken wrist, assigned to Shapiro by my primary physician. It seemed ideal: his office was within walking distance, and since I can't bike or drive with my pained wrist, I was thrilled to be so near. On arrival I was greeted by a friendly office manager, who asked me to fill out forms. Ah, is she the one who sounded so mean the night before when she called to confirm the day's appointment and to list demands of what to bring? So different in person. The list of forms includes a cringe: the arbitration clause. I write something like: “I trust, but prefer not to sign.” All doctors had accepted my preference, only one manager calling back, but not forcing the matter. I set the forms on the counter and returned to my seat. Soon my name was called. It was the friendly office manager. You need to sign this, she said, pointing to the arbitration clause. I don't understand, I said. Other doctors don't make me sign. If you want to be seen, you have to sign. Okay, I said, flaring a bit, but I'll also write: "Signed under duress." Thus I scribbled, with my angry signature beneath. The friendly office manager said: I'll bring you a new form. If you want to be seen, you have to sign. I don't understand, I said. I have the right to refuse. And we have the right to refuse to see you, the friendly office manager said. If you don't sign, you have the right to go elsewhere. Swirling thoughts, too quick to capture: Such sublime confidence in the righteousness of her cause: and me with a two-day broken wrist, on a Friday around 10:30 a.m., half-sensing I won't be able to get it cast before Monday if I continue the Great Refusal. Knowing too that the mysterious pain in my thumb is increasing, and wondering how long I can bear it. Our eyes met, the friendly manager's and mine, her sublime confidence radiating, leaping into my brain where I imagined her telling colleagues and friends how she masters such moments: "And we have the right to refuse to see you. If you don't sign, you have the right to go elsewhere." After an intense second of eyeing each other: "I guess I'll go elsewhere," I said. As I retrieved my stuff from the waiting room chair, one man asked which doctor I'd been scheduled to see. Shapiro, I said. He's not that good, the man said, suggesting I was lucky to escape him. Didn't judge him so in June 2008 when I broke my left femur, and was saved by indigent laws -- laws declaring that poverty shall not be cause for denial of treatment. Shapiro was somehow the on-call surgeon. I came out okay, though Shapiro's luck wasn't so good: I couldn't pay his $4,000 bill. He unleashed the debt-collectors, a dismal if futile demand. That torment aside, I sometimes have pains when hauling my bike up the stairs to my second-floor apartment, or when sitting or sleeping in a wrong position, but I'm assuming few surgeons could have done better. Sometimes, however, when the rod seems to poke my hip area, I wonder if it's an inch or half-inch too long. (These notes sparked by office visit Friday morning, January 22, 2016, typed with one hand, one fingerstroke at a time, fixing many typos, taking over two-and-a-half hours, so Gentle Readers can be sure I wanted a chance to be heard. My wrist, with intensifying thumb-joint pains, wasn't seen by an orthopedist until Wednesday, January 27. Thanks for caring, Shapiro -- forever a part of me, yet this arbitration demand stirs disgust with the gratitude.) March 26, 2016 upgrade: I must add that a bad experience with a wrist surgeon made me realize Dr. … More

Shapiro kept me waiting over 45 minutes just to get in the room. I went in for extreme swelling and pain in my ankle due to a snowboarding accident. He walked in and immediately started moving my ankle to the point I was in tears. He spent a total of 5 minutes in the room with me before sending me for an MRI and asking me to come back in a few weeks. Long story short, it's broken with torn tendons. No, I will not be back in a few weeks. Or ever.
