Dr. Parvez K Sultan

I am an RN with almost 50 years of service. Following a routine cardiac cath by my cardiologist, Dr. Sultan was consulted and a week later performed a quadruple bypass and aortic valve replacement at St. Vincent Medical Ctr. The surgery went very well and the post op care I received in CCU was tremendous. Dr. Sultan himself is a man of few words but I believe his skills as a cardiothoracic surgeon are as good as anyone in and around Birmingham. Dr. Sultan's staff was courteous and attentive. I would not hesitate in recommending Dr. Sultan to anyone.

This is a sorriest doctor because he said one of my closest bubba pawpaw was gonna live then 2 months later he said he is gonna die

He did an awesome job with robotic surgery, removal of upper right lung. BUT, he’s always late! Three hours late for initial appointment. Scheduled surgery for 7 AM I had to be there at 5 AM. Got there and set in waiting room until after 9. At 10:30 was taken back to prep area. He didn’t start surgery until after 1PM. Saw him for about 5 minutes in my hospital room next morning. Does NOT have good bedside manner. Evidently good surgeon but very poor communication skills. Didn’t even show up for follow up appointment. That was handled by his nurse practitioner.

Dr Sultan was referred by my primary Dr for a growth in my sternum. Dr Sultan did a great job & made me feel like I was his only patient. Couldn't ask for better.

I would never recommend him to anyone.

Performance and perfection saved my mom and her leg. 5 bypasses.

This man performed open heart surgery on a member of my family, who had gone to hospital after a fall which resulted in a badly broken arm. The arm would require surgery and insertion on metal pins to correct the break. There was a history of heart disease and family member had a cardiologist who he saw regularly to keep a check on his heart upon entering the hospital the staff was made aware of previous heart condition and this is where Dr. Sultan became involved at which time he demanded open heart surgery Must be preformed and surgery to correct the broken arm would have to wait. We wanted to have our regular cardiologist whom had been treating family member for several years to be brought in and get his advise/ opinion before such major surgery but he was out of town and not scheduled to return for a few more days we wanted to wait as we felt we were being pressured and forced into something we felt might not be nessasary but Dr. Sultan insisted this must be done immediately and could not wait. Its important to note that this family member besides the pain from broken arm was perfectly fine and sitting up in hospital bed watching tv, eating, talking with family and grandchildren who had come to hospital. The heart surgery was performed by Dr. Sultan the following day afterwards Dr. Sultan came out spoke with us, said everything went well. Two days later family member was dead, one of the nurses looked at us and said I apologize but it is a holiday weekend and we are short staffed?!?! I could go into more details, but the main point I feel is important for everyone to know is that this was my family's experience with Dr. Sultan you can take from it what you want but we feel anyone considering Dr. Sultan to treat themselves or a loved one has the right to know this did happen and my entire family feels strongly that Dr. Sultan's rush to judgment and insistence that we agree to something we felt unsure of resulted in the greatest loss our family has ever suffered and a loss our family will never fully recover from. Did a triple bypass with excellent results and perfect followup care. I would recommend him to anyone.

Dr Sultan performed carotid artery surgery on me. My left carotid artery was 80% blocked. The surgery itself went well I guess. I am alive. However, when you fill out information sheets for a doctor, you expect the doctor will read that info, especially allergic reactions to meds. I am an older person. I have not had any surgeries in years nor any reason to take strong pain medications. But, I do know and have known for many years that I am allergic to codeine. I guess there are no pain medication now that are not codeine based. After my surgery, I was given no pain medications for many hours. When I finally became practically incoherent with pain, the people that were supposed to be taking care of me called Dr Sultan. They came back and informed me I was allergic to everything for pain . I was hurting so terribly, I said so there is no pain medicine except codeine anymore? The only thing I could remember taking that helped me was Demerol. I told the nurses, aids whatever. They conferred again with Dr Sultan, who refused to give me the medicine. If you have ever had any kind of serious surgery you know how quickly afterwards you are given pain meds. I was not given any for hours. and by the time I was finally given the Demerol, it was such a small amount it did not help. I sat in ICU in the middle of my bed screaming in pain, and crying . I was given no help except 1 600 Motrin which I am not even supposed to take due to it being an NSAID. This is not a good thing. And any doctor that does not find out what a patient can take who is allergic BEFORE major surgery in my opinion is negalent and does not care about his patients. This doctor was recommended to me and I may eventually have to have my other carotid artery fixed, but I can gaurantee everyone I will never use him again. I will not ever go to Dr Sultan again. He did a fantastic job with my procedure but they don't have respect for the patient's time. My first visit I had to wait over 2 hours and it looks like my follow up (after surgery) I'll have to wait over an hour. If I didn't need his specialty in my surgery I would have left the first time.
