This is a low-skilled accident-prone surgeon. If you have any option to go to another surgeon, take that option. Read the other one star ratings and take them seriously. Do not trust your child’s life in this man’s hands. And if God forbid he does surgery on your child, he will avoid ever having to see you or your child again.

Paralyzed my sons vocal cords shut during heart surgery, needed a tracheotomy due to the damage It came dislodged multiple times in the care of PCH resulting in cpr for 5 minutes and a stroke and never once did dr Valez come to see how my son was doing after the heart repair be did. He also told me my son needed to be a single ventricle patient and their was no other option. I got a second opinion and my son now has his entire repaired functioning heart. I DO NOT recommend this doctor for open heart surgery. If you have a choice, I recommend seeking care for your child elsewhere. In 2015 my child had open heart surgery performed by Daniel Velez. Her heart was repaired, however her sternum was brought back together in a haphazard way leading to a sternum deformity. When I asked for a follow up visit to discuss the matter with Dr Velez, Phoenix Children’s Hospital’s Loss prevention department tried to stop me from meeting with Dr. Velez. They even blocked me on social media for sharing this story. After finally meeting with the doctor, he offered a second procedure to attempt to repair the issue, but blamed the deformity on my child moving around after the surgery. This was not true since the sternum was clearly out of alignment when she was brought out of surgery and before she even woke up. Also, shouldn't a child’s sternum be secured in a better manner after a critical procedure such as an open heart surgery? If you have a choice, save yourself the headache and heartache by seeking treatment for your child from a different doctor.

You cannot tell from the description, but this doctor is a male and a pediatric cardiac surgeon. He performed surgery on my daughter and repaired most of the issues with her heart, but left her rib cage extremely deformed. After leaving the hospital I have received NO follow up from this doctor or his office. To date I do not know if all of his patients are left with such deformities, or what the options are for repair since we have had no contact with him. My daughter's deformity is much worse than I have seen on any other person who had this surgery, and I would recommend using another doctor to have your child's open heart surgery if you have a choice to do so. Dr. Valez explained with great care what would take place during my daughter's several surgeries and heart transplant. He spent time explaining directly to my daughter as well. He checked on her every day and reassured her that she was going to be better than ok!

Dr. Velez did my son's first heart surgery when he was 5 months old. He was amazing! He was knolageable and experienced with my son's extremely rare congenital heart defect. He has a great bedside manner! He is the only one I would trust with my son.

Velez performed surgery on my daughter & repaired most of the issues with her heart, but left her rib cage extremely deformed.
