Dr. Brentjens is a great doctor! His office is a bit of a drive for me but after trying the local dermatologists in my area I’ve found out the hard way that his expertise is totally worth the drive. He is thorough and caring. I get frequent squamous cell skin lesions and I’ve never had to go back after he treats them, he takes care of it the first time. He also will get rid of any “crusties” happily. Office is great, I can always get a quick appointment when I need to. Wish I could give him 20 stars! Dr. Brentjens is a great doctor! GreatDoctor! I’ve been to many dermatologists due to frequent squamous cell skin cancer lesions. He is the only doc who will make sure cancer cells are gone when he does the biopsy. I appreciate so much that when I get a skin lesion I can get an appointment quickly. Complaints about overbooking or wait times may be due to the fact that he cares very much for his skin cancer patients health. I drive 60 miles to see him and I’ve found out the hard way that he’s totally worth the drive. Can’t say enough nice things about him I’m fortunate to have found him.

9/5/18 I went to primary doctors’ office and saw PA regarding skin reaction related to Rosacea on my face. She recommended I see dermatologist, Dr. Mathijs Brentjens and prescribed Metronidazole to use in the interim. I called Eastern Dermatology, next available appointment for Dr. Bentjens was 11/13/2018 @ 1:45. I arrived at the Eastern Dermatology office in Elizabeth City about 15 minutes early (to allow time to complete paperwork). At 2:00 pm I questioned receptionist – it was 15 minutes past my appointment time and they had taken people who came in after me. She said they were entering my prescriptions in the ipad and would take me soon. At 2:30 I was finally called back. I went through questions with an intake nurse (?) – the first of which was, did I have a flu shot yet this year. Then she told me to undress, except for foundation garments, and put on a gown, I questioned for rosacea – she said Dr. Brentjens does a full body scan for all new patients. A few minutes later Dr. Brentjens came in the room. He said to me you look upset. I said I am. He ASKED why. I told him why – because I had to wait 2 months for an appointment only to sit in a waiting room for an extended amount of time and then when I finally get in the back their first question is not about why are you here to see us, but did you get a flu shot. Dr. Brentjens says well I am very busy, what would you have me do about it – I said don’t overbook. Dr. Brentjens said if I didn’t overbook you would have had to wait 2 years for your appointment rather than 2 months. I don’t think this is going to work out. I’m going to refer you to another Dermatologist. You can go to Tidewater Skin Care, they will be able to get you in quickly. Don’t worry, we won’t charge for this visit, you can get dressed and leave. My comments: • BE HONEST – Asking everyone if they have had their flu shot (when you are a dermatologist), doing full body scans on someone who has little sun exposure and does not use a tanning bed and overbooking are about increasing your income, not addressing your patients’ medical needs. If you were concerned about taking care of patients medical needs you would have taken care of mine. • EVERYONES’ TIME IS VALUABLE – If when I called to make my original appointment they had said to me please be aware Dr Brenjens ALWAYS overbooks and there is ALWAYS a significant wait time for appointments I would not have made the appointment, because my time is valuable to me also. • If you don’t have time for new patients – DON’T ACCEPT NEW PATIENTS • Do you think I, or my insurance company, would have paid a bill for you to tell me you did not want me as a patient? Dr. Brentjens is a fabulous doctor. He has treated all of my family in the local area with great outcomes in all regards. He can be hard to get in to see because is is such a great dermatologist and in high demand but for the care you will receive it is totally worth it. I wish I could give Dr. B. more than five stars. Awesome doctor. Great personality and really knows his stuff. I saw someone complain about a full body scan for new patients. That scan caught melanoma on each of my parents and probably saved their lives, especially my dad whose case was further along. Took off skin tags I had for years in seconds and several moles with no scarring and treated my rosacea better than any of my other docs. I have never felt rushed, dismissed, or herded through the office and I appreciate the time he takes. I would say if you want the best doc in the area who will take his time with you and is more concerned about each patient rather than hitting a time table, he’s worth the wait, if you want a quick, assembly line quack to work on your skin and possibly miss something serious, then this isn’t the place for you. More concerned with billable dollars than patient care, overbooks all the time. I went to see him about Rosacea (face condition). I have very little sun exposure and do not use a tanning bed. He was more interested in whether or not I had a flu shot and giving me a full body scan than addressing the medical condition I went to see him for. He expects patients to wait an hour to see him, all the time. Overbooking is the way he runs his office, because it seems to be all about his making money

I've seen several dermatologists during my 14 years on the Outer Banks. Dr. Math is the best by far. He is cheerful, knowledgeable, competent, courteous, concerned about one's overall health, and, despite being very busy, spends time with his patients. This is why we drive sixty miles to see him.
