My daughter, 8 year old, suddenly got very swollen after contracting strep virus, 2 weeks of coughing with minor sore throat pain, without developing fever. Her nephrotic syndrome was very difficult to treat, and she did not respond to any medication. We stayed with the attending doctor that she was admitted at the hospital that night, became our main treating doctor. He was piling on more and more meds, and her kidney is failing fast. With less than 6 month, her kidney function is less than 30%. Every week we were end up in the hospital, beside Albumin infusion, a temporary fix until her kidney will leak the protein out, a momentary comfort in kidney function. Met Dr. Quigley during the initial few month of hospital stay when kidney biospy result was just out. He called out IgM nephropathy right away, was recommending the Rituximab. Unfortunately at the time, we were new to the world of kidney disease, our main treating doctor does not believe it would work as it is a protein, and her leak was too big, "she will just pee it out". His treatment plan was increase the meds dosage to keep her NS under control. Week after week, we stayed with the first doctor, every week reaching a new level as her kidney continue to deteriorate. The massive meds were very harsh on her GI track, she could not keep any food down and vomit out meds, diarrhea, severely dehydrated, impacting further of her kidney function. (some of the student doctor even attempting in calling her faking her vomit so that she gets to miss school. Anyway, truly most depressing and vulnerable period). During this dark period, changing doctor was in the back of our mind. We need a doctor that will listen to us. Despite their medication knowledge that infusion long term will make kidney worse, but during the short period while she had the infusion, the infusion makes her kidney stable. While chatting with all the doctors in the department, we found Dr. Quigley makes most sense, extremely knowledgable. And his assistant Laura is very prompt in following up. We restarted her treatment by stopping all the medications, did the chemo Rituximab, but she failed to respond in the first 6 weeks of the treatment (typical span to know if the treatment is working or not), then we gradually adding on more med while keeping her stable. I really like the staff at Children's. They return calls very quickly. They remember my son each time we come in. I really like Martha the Nurse Practitioner that works with Dr. Quigley. He doesn't spend alot of time with you in general, (Martha does most of the questioning etc.and then he comes in) but if you have questions written down to ask he will take them time to answer them. We had him when we first got put into the hospital for my sons kidney problem. I would not have gone to any other nephrologist. I trust him!
