Edward George Mcfarland

I am a retired surgeon who traveled from Florida to see Dr. McFarland for shoulder replacement. His knowledge, thorough exam and expertise are quite evident. It was well worth the trip. I would recommend him highly to anyone seeking assessment of a shoulder injury.

Dr. McFarland was polite, professional, personable and extremely knowledgeable. He provided valuable advice on the condition of my shoulder, shoulder replacement surgery, and how to mitigate further damage until a time when surgery may be necessary. Kiosk check in was user friendly a short wait time.

Dr. McFarland is a truly outstanding physician and surgeon. He has incomparable knowledge, experience and skill, which he combines with a genuinely caring nature and quick wit that makes every visit a pleasure. He is an outstanding communicator and conveys academic and practical knowledge in a easy and helpful manner that best allows each patient to make well informed decisions. When Dr. McFarland, meets with you, only you and your condition matter. He is also a great team leader. Orthopedic surgery is hugely complex and as such requires a great team to achieve great results. Dr. McFarland is the first to acknowledge this and has assembled a premier team that makes for a great experience and great results. I cannot be more pleased with the results of my shoulder replacement surgery. Almost magically, I have gone from chronic pain, sleepless nights and increasingly limited mobility to essentially no pain and a great range of motion. I could not ask for more.

Dr McFarland is a great surgeon, from my experiences with him he really cares about his patients. My guess is he's one of if not the best shoulder surgeon in this country, I say that because while waiting for surgery I met some people that had flown in from Egypt for surgery with him. I had surgery 16 years ago and as they rolled me back in a very busy operating area (John Hopkins Hosptal) he marked my surgery shoulder with a number 1 and walked in as to say we are the number 1 surgery team. His confidence gave me confidence so it was easy to protect my shoulder post surgery, cause I walked away with the feeling that I wanted to protect his work. Turns out as I get older my surgery shoulder is the strongest joint on my body. He's a great human being at the same time.

Finally found a doctor that could identify my true issue and give me options to correct the problem

He is pretty prompt , kind and professional. His Colleagues speak highly of him. His reputation is stellar. Can not expect anything more.

I have trusted Dr McFarland with my shoulder health for the last 20years. He always allows enough time to do a through exam and listen to my concerns.

Dr. McFarland repaired my rotator cuffs and subsequently replaced my shoulders. He is an extraordinary surgeon - I can bike, hike (with hiking poles), ski, exercise with weights and live my life with no pain in my shoulders. I have referred friends to him and they, too, had excellent outcomes. He is meticulous and caring - just an extremely kind and competent professional.

Dr McFarland performed my rotator cuff repair surgery last year along with three other procedures, my follow up visits with Dr McFarland ensure my PT and general health is most important, we have in depth conversations about my path to recovery, returning to work and my mental health. I believe his knowledge and ability to remedy injuries with his skilled hands are a blessing to all his patients and Colleagues. In a nutshell… he truly cares for his patients.

The best you could ask for! So attentive and very knowledgeable. I am fortunate to have been referred to Dr. McFarland.

This will be my second shoulder with dr McFarland. First was 4 years ago and it is still working perfectly. Was hoping that my other shoulder would not need replacing but since it does I have no hesitation returning to dr McFarland

Dr "Ed" is absolute best in class! He has been on top of my case since the shoulder replacement in June 2021. His staff is very professional and they took very good care of me. I had little or no pain after my surgery which really surprised me. If you ever have need of a joint replacement, JHH and Dr. ED is the doctor to take care of you. He does incredible work!. I will let him do my other shoulder when the time comes.

Dr. McFarland treated my torn rotator cuff and thanks his expertise I’m doing great about two months following my surgery. The entire Hopkins team was outstanding in every respect. Five stars to everyone involved in my surgery especially Dr. McFarland.

Dr. McFarland is the gold standard for orthopaedic medicine. Not only does he listen intently about your problem but he takes the time to verbally communicate to you of his findings and makes certain that you understand in simple english. When another surgeon outside of the Hopkins network screwed up my shoulder, that surgeon wanted to do another radical surgery to cover up his error. It was then that I went out of network to get a second opinion from Dr. McFarland who in his very jovial manner overruled the previous non Hopkins doctor and saved the day. This Dr.McFarland knows what he is doing and not only is he a full Professor but an expert. If you have a shoulder problem this is the Doctor to see period.

Dr. McFarland has helped me tremendously with a failed shoulder implant done in another state. I am so grateful for his professionalism and willingness to provide detailed Information and follow-up. I highly recommend Dr. McFarland and I’m so glad he is my physician.

Very thorough and not rushed.

Dr McFarland is an exceptional, personable and compassionate healer. His healing began at our first meeting when we conversed about my reasons for coming as comfortably as talking with a favorite professor. I learned ortho stuff. Dr McFarland shared his knowledge, asked incisive questions, LISTENED to what I had to say, and did so warmly and with good humor. I immediately LIKED this guy who was going to fix me, and it created a foundation of trust that grew and made all our interactions thereafter positive. There was NO sense of of being rushed - how wonderful! His personal contact and attention continued through surgery and post-op care, though he's a busy guy. When Dr M. IS busy he has an equally kind, efficient and competent staff. there's a shared work and customer care ethic. (hi Marcy B!) I observed Dr M. interact with his staff and interns. He teaches rather than trains as a mentor and as a boss he treats his people with the same patience and respect I received.

Dr McFarland was very thorough and asked questions to my specific condition. He explained things at my level and made sure I understood everything. He gave a path to treatment that we will follow.

A compassionate physician who I will certainly recommend to anyone who needs his help. I would also add he is probably the most competent doctor I have encountered in the United States!

Dr. Mcfarlane was a no show for my scheduled appointment on 10/29/20. I waited 2 hours in an exam room before walking out. No communication from staff. After 1:45 minutes a fellow came in and spoke to me. Never saw Dr. Mcfarlane. He never even had the common decency to give me a follow up call to apologize or talk to me regarding my shoulder. Then he had the nerve to bill $750 for a visit he never showed up for. I consider this criminal. Beware of this guy.

i am destry prysiazny disabled from birth spina bifida and spent the early part of my life pushing myself in my push wheelchair thus i tore both shoulders i was in my late thirties early 40s ill be 49 and i just recently tore my left shoulder again i think anyhow i have to go to get another mri since the doc dont know without the mri if i actually tore my shoulder again he did not want to give me my bi lateral shoulder shots of cortazone but even though i was kinda upset when i heard that cuza how much pain i was in and still am in dr mcfarland told me if he would have given me the cortazine it would have made the mri show a false positive so now since i now this i have a better understanding of the situation in closeing even though it seems to a person on the outside looking in the doctors methods of giving me these shots has not worked but i beg to differ due to the fact he is saving me from needing a surgery in my opinion one day and at this point in my life i had 200 surgeries

Dr. McFarland performed my shoulder replacement surgery. He is extremely attentive and knowledgeable, and bother the procedure and the recovery went as well as could be expected.

Dr. McFarland is in a class by himself. He is a brilliant surgeon. He repaired my very damaged right shoulder, in 2018, & now I have fully functional shoulder! Dr. McFarland is meticulous in the office as well as the operating suite. Post op appointments are as thorough as initial consultations. Dr. McFarland has interns & young Drs. training under him, and has them do through examinations prior to his exam. Dr. McFarland leaves no stone unturned, and will make corrections immediately if the examinations by interns & young Drs. falls short in any area.

Systematic, organized, attentive, respectful

Dr McFarland performed My shoulder surgery. I came to him As a second opinion. I was not happy with the first Dr I saw. Every visit Dr. McFarland was friendly. He Took his time answering my questions. Just a great bedside manner. I’ve recovered well and recommend Him and his team.

Saw him for a consult on my shoulder. I waited a while, but I was kept informed. He personally called me to follow up on my MRI, which is really impressive.

Dr McFarland is not only a highly skilled surgeon but a man that has an incredible bedside manner! He takes whatever time is needed to thoroughly answer your questions - you never feel rushed. He has an engaging personality and great sense of humor. His PA Marcy is fabulous ! I highly recommend Dr McFarland - he has been worth my 1-1/2 hr drive each way to have him as my doctor!

Dr. McFarland fixed my left should several years ago, after four unsuccessful surgeries. When my right shoulder started hurting, I immediately scheduled an appointment with Dr. McFarland, even though I am now based out of Northern Virginia. He and his team are simply the best you could ask for. Very thorough and detailed. Watching how he interacts in this teaching hospital gives me hope for the next generation of Doctors.

After preliminary visits with Dr. McFarland's staff and ultimately a visit from him, I found him to very cordial and explained to me what was going on with a shoulder that was so painful it was keeping me awake at night. The treatment he prescribed has worked so far! Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!

Dr. McFarland. Is patient and takes time to answer and explain everything. I have found Hopkins Doctors to be kind and patient in general and for a skilled surgeon Dr. McFarland is the best.

I fell and was in great pain. I went to Patient First who told me my shoulder was broken and recommended I see Dr. McFarland. He saw me right away without any appointment and cared for me for the last year. He is terrific.

Dr. McFarland performed a left total shoulder replacement on me in March 2003. He saved my shoulder that had eroded from a staph aureus infection. He takes time to listen to you, take detailed measurements, analyze your problem, reviews radiology results with you in detail, and treats you with respect. His PAs work with him to evaluate your situation, after which he performs his own measurements. His surgical team is top notch, like a pit crew at NASCAR. Best surgeon I have ever had.

Dr. McFarland did a reverse shoulder replacement for me almost a year ago and I can best describe the results as OUTSTANDING - it is almost as good as new. He is thoroughly professional, caring, compassionate, and personable. He is very enthusiastic, highly energetic, and has an excellent sense of humor. Outstanding care! Just turned 62 and had second replacement shoulder 7 months ago, 12 months after first replacement, both the result of severe osteo-arthritis. Resumed normal activities after roughly 6 months each time, including rock climbing and cycling! Highly recommend anyone with shoulder problems to see Dr. McFarland.

Dr. McFarland replaced both of my shoulders. I am nearly pain free. He has a great staff, very efficient and found that visits to his office went very smoothly. Both surgeries were without complication. Would go back to him again. In fact my son is scheduled for surgery with him in December.

Excellent care and results for Reverse Total Shoulder Arthroplasty. Answered all of my extensive technical questions and provided peer reviewed evidence supporting the efficacy of this invasive surgery. Great range of motion, relief from pain and excellent stability. Explained to satisfaction all my questions concerning shoulder contour changes expected. Recommend not waiting, since time equals bone loss wear the prosthesis needs to attach too. Doctor McFarland can explain the details.

Dr. McFarland and his team are great. No waiting to see the Dr. I was there to have both of my shoulders replaced. Dr. McFarland explained everything in lay mans terms and answered all of my questions and my wifes questions. I never felt rushed during an appointment. It has been 11/2 years for my right shoulder and 1 year for my left and I couldn't be happier. A great Dr. and his team is outstanding.

I had a MA injury in my left shoulder. I had physical therapy and ended up going to see 3 orthopedic doctors. Minimal effort. I finally found Dr. McFarland. He set a team of his assistants to film my range of motion & analyzed it. He then called me in to say he didn't know what was wrong but he'd go in anyway. He found it, fixed it, and I was able to use my shoulder for the first time in 2 years. Best ever, anywhere. My son's wrestling injury is next. Left shoulder. We're going straight to him.

I was a patient 3 and 4 years ago and had both shoulders reconstructed which he did a completely stellar job on also his bed side manner is impeccable I have never been treated so well by any Dr his attentiveness to my situation and the way he treated my wife and children both before and after my surgery are the absolute best. You will not find another orthopedic surgeon as good as he on the entire east coast!!! Thank you Dr McFarland and staff you guys are second to none

I recommend Dr. McFarland to all people who need an experienced doctor in hard/unusual cases. Dr. McFarland saved my right shoulder after another doctor messed it up and I was loosing my arms mobility. No other doctor in my home base would touch my shoulder. Only Dr. McFarland conduct Revision surgery. My shoulder feels like brand new. I ended up replacing my other shoulder within 6 months of the first one and I have never been happier.

Ok so I have NEVER left a review for any doctor, from any practice or for any reason until today. My experience with Dr. Edward McFarland and his entire Johns Hopkins staff was so amazing that I really felt I owed them all something in return. If you have seen an orthopedic surgeon for any reason and are within any reasonable distance (3 hour round trip for me) get a second opinion from McFarland. Or save some time and go there first! I sure wish I had, it would have saved me a lot of pain! A+++

My left shoulder was killing me. So I made the decision to have replacement surgery. Dr McFarland is best at what he does. I can lift my arm above my head now without severe pain. I glad I did it. Not to mention he is the friendliest doctor I've ever had.
