Dr. Paul Thomas Mecherikunnel

He obtained his degree from a prestigious University. However, he lacks professional interpersonal skills necessary for overall quality of care for his patient's. He's has a obvious passive-aggressive personality disorder. After your surgery, your follow up care is an inconvenience to him. I know personal from experience.

I was referred to Dr.Paul due to a work place injury. I had 4-5 appointments with him. Initially he was professional and spoke to me in a respectful manner, the first two appointments he wrote out step by step instructions for my injury. The 3rd appointment I called in due to increased uncontrollably pain and he then ordered two more testing which I appreciated. These two additional test where scheduled about 3 weeks apart due to availability. He then instructed me to drop off copies of imaging films and to schedule an appointment after all test were completed. I stopped by his office dropped off the copies and scheduled an appointment with a staff member at the front desk and she gave me the date of 11/1/21 at 12:30 and wrote it on a business card. I took the day off on 11/01/21 to attend the appointment and discuss the results and an updated note for work for accommodations. So I showed up on 11/1/21 and Dr.Paul cracked the door and demanded to know why I was there, I told him I scheduled with his colleague he stormed over to his scheduling book and told me “No, no your not on the schedule and you missed your appointment on 10/27/21 and I have an meeting right now.” If I missed an appointment on 10/27/21 why was I not informed and why does he not have an automated system that reminds clients of their appointment prior to the date of. I attempted to repeat what he told me the previous appointment and he began to raise his voice and over talk me. I ask kindly if he could update my note from work and he groaned twice and in a pressured voice stated “ No, I have a meeting, let me write down the date and time I can see you next on 11/4/21 10:30.” I just processed to walk out the door because I felt uncomfortable as I was walking out of the door he proceeded to hand me the card with the next appointment date. I think if he had a minute to look for the card and reschedule he could have looked for the accommodation paper and just check a box and sign his name but he was “late for a meeting.” So 11/4/21 our final appointment and last interaction. He greeted me at the door in a neutral way and I followed him to his exam room he read the results to 3 times with high lights and underlining the findings. I inquired as to what my opinions are for pain management and he in a pressured voice stated he does not believe my pain/injury is work related and when I asked him if my injury at work would have provoked this underling injury. He raised his left hand and voice and stated “this is not from your injury at work, you had this before your injury” and he proceeded to tell me to cases he has seen this occur. I told him I understand but I am a 30 year old nurse and have never experienced pain to my hand until this injury and would like to not me in pain any more. He then said that I can go to a pain clinic and he can not recommend anything other than rest and Ibuprofen. So then I asked him to write me a “Return to work with no accommodations.” As he is writing the note he is repeatedly asked me if they are giving me a hard time at work and what I will do about the pain. He’s tone of voice very demeaning and behavior was micro aggressive, so I just replied matter of factually “ I will reduce the due of the hand as much as possible but I am losing money and hours due to this pain.” Overall he is very knowledgeable of the anatomy and physiology of the human limbs.

He is that rare surgeon that actually spends the time to listen , evaluate you and give you your diagnosis and treatment options. He is patient, compassionate and competent.

This Surgeon is top notch. He truly cares about his patients and spends time to listen to them. He does not rush you through your appointment. His follow up after surgery is incredible . I cannot say enough about Dr Paul.

Had a surgery with Dr. Mecherikunnel a few years and and I haven’t had a problem since. He was so great and thorough in all his work and always made me feel comfortable. Truly appreciate him!

Was having stomach problems and visited a specialist in Reston and our consultation lasted about 1 minute. He then told me to get some OTC medicine but didn't bother addressing any of my concerns. I then went to Dr. Mecherikunnel and she was so patient and asked lots of questions and really made me feel like I mattered and that she would try to find the root of the problem. He was a no show to my appointment. No reason given - just he is in his car. 10 am appointment, first for him of the day ad he no shows. It’s now 10:25 am. I can be on my way back to work by now.

We found Dr. Mecherikunnel almost by accident. My husband was admitted to the emergency room for a hand injury, and a plastic surgeon (Dr. X) was the ER doctor on call. Dr. X discharged my husband with antibiotics and was told to watch and wait. We went to a follow up appointment with Dr. X almost a week later, and with no diagnostics or work up Dr. X said my husband needed surgery (his practice accepted no insurance so we'd be left to figure out how to pay for it). We wanted a second opinion, so started calling doctors covered by our insurance. Dr. Mecherikunnel was able to see my husband the same day, took time to do a thorough work up (which Dr. X had never done), explained why the surgery Dr. X proposed didn't make any sense, described the type of imaging he wanted done, provided a referral for the person he wanted to do it, and said he'd review the imagining as soon as it came in. He also proposed a number of low tech solutions that we could do at home that made an immediate positive difference. The thorough imaging recommended by Dr. Mecherikunnel showed that my husband didn't need surgery at all. I'm honestly so grateful to have found Dr. Mecherikunnel. If you are looking for a doctor who is knowledgeable, compassionate, and committed to your best interests, look no further.

This review comes years after the fact, but part of the reason I'm writing the review is because even after these six years Mecherikunnel's surgery has held up! My finger was shattered in 8 different places. I went to two hand doctors before Mecherikunnel and the best those two could promise was that my finger would look normal, but wouldn't actually function. Mecherikunnel delivered more than either of them promised, he restored both the look and function of my finger for which I am very grateful. I don't have experience with his other services, but when it really mattered he came through for me! This review comes years after the fact. As such details such as how staff acted, wait times etc. are mostly forgotten to me. What I can write about is what matters the most, the results of the actual hand surgery I saw the doctor for. My finger was fractured in 8 places and there was a real risk that I would not be able to use it again. Doctor M. restored all functionality to my finger and it has been working fine for over 6 years! Cannot recommend him enough!

Dr. Mecherikunnel was very easy to make an appointment with. His office is in a less appealing part of town, which initially put us off. But after our appointment, we felt much more positive about him. He spent a lot of time discussing my condition and what my options were with surgery. He was very patient in answering all my questions, and was very personable in chatting about other shared interests we had. He seemed to be very knowledgable and experienced in performing the procedure I was considering.

I was scheduled a surgery with Doctor Paul Mecherikunnel at Reston Hospital at 9:30 AM, Nov 25, 2013. I had arrived the hospital 2 hours earlier than surgery time based on hospital instructions. I had got a shot for numbing my left hand skin in order to apply the IV. IV was also applied to me in preparing for the surgery. But the surgeon didn’t show up on surgery time. Hospital called the surgeon and the surgeon said he doesn’t know the surgery. This is absolutely unacceptable. Dr. Mecherikunnel acknowledged that his staff messed up the schedule. Not accountable.
